Pinellas County Utilities

Water Quality Lab Intern

May - June 2019 • Largo, FL

What I liked

I was able to see a lot of what I was learning in school in the work that I was doing there. All aspects of science were applied throughout the laboratory. Was able to see various machines in-use for chemical analysis which was really cool.

What I wish was different

I wish my internship had been over a longer period of time, there is still a lot more that I can learn around the lab. I plan on contacting management to continue to work as a volunteer or part time while I finish my last year of my bachelors to continue with the great learning experience that I had while I was there.

Advice

Internships are a great way to get a feeling of where you want to work. At the water quality lab I worked in various settings indoor and outdoor doing tests on drinking water, water in aquatic ecosystems, and wastewater. Was able to visit multiple industrial facilities and learn about many aspects of water transport and treatment throughout the county.

Data Intern

February - July 2019 • Clearwater, FL

What I liked

I liked the ability to use my coding skills that I have learned at St. Petersburg College. In addition, I was able to learn a lot of new skills about the gathering, manipulating, and displaying of data. This position allowed me to work remotely, at night and on weekends.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have had more time to work at the office to acquire a better rapport with my coworkers including my supervisor.

Advice

My one piece of advice that I would like to share about this experience is that the intern should ask questions and glean as much information from their coworkers as they can.
