Piedmont Fellows

Fellow

August 2019 - May 2020 • Jamestown, NC

What I liked

I love the welcoming atmosphere that everyone from Friendly Hills Church and the Fellow Program provided from the very first time I came to visit. It was truly a blessing to have so many people pouring wisdom into my life and helped me grow exponentially in my faith journey and professional career. I also like all different activities that we did together - hangouts, bible studies, theology classes, conferences, etc. that allowed me to interact and meet new people.

What I wish was different

I wished we had more opportunities to serve outside of the church - even though the Kids' Ministry was in much need, I just felt like I could have better utilized my gifts elsewhere- teaching English to Vietnamese immigrants, serving food to homeless people, evangelize, etc.

Advice

One piece of advice I can give is to allow time to absorb the reading materials and really write down concisely key lessons in a notebook so you can refer back when you need it. I would also suggest going the extra mile to network with local business people and keep relationships going if you are planning to establish your career in the Triad Area, NC.

Content Development Fellow

August 2019 - May 2020 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

I liked being challenged to grow personally, professionally, spiritually, and relationally in the context of a supportive community. I really enjoyed fellowshipping and growing with the other fellows, as well as serving and building relationships at the church at which the program is based. I appreciated the investment others made in me, and the opportunities to learn about myself, my faith, and applying my faith to my vocation. I also enjoyed our intercultural ministry experience in London.

What I wish was different

COVID hit during my year with the fellows, which caused our year to end with a lot less in-person interaction with each other, our teachers, and our church than we expected or would have liked. Of course, I wish that hadn't happened, but we made the best of it and grew in the midst of it. Also, my job wound up being less aligned with my interests than I had hoped, but I still learned about myself, the 'business world', and applying my faith to my work, and also gained experience to take to my next job.

Advice

Lean into the opportunity to have others invest in you, make sure to invest in others as well, and plan to grow in time management.
