Volunteer

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I liked being able to talk with the patients and spend time with the kids who were at the hospital. I also got to talk to many different people who worked at the hospital and I asked them questions about their job and what a day at work was like for them.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to talk to other volunteers about what each position was before I picked where I wanted to be assigned to.

Advice

I would advise everyone to volunteer at PCH and to volunteer in different volunteer positions so that they get exposed to different parts of the hospital.

Summer Intensive Volunteer

May - July 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I was able to experience 3 different areas of the hospital. It was so helpful to be assigned a supervisor in each area that worked one-on-one with me to make sure that I was understanding everything going on and getting the most out of my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to spend more hours each week in the hospital. More time would have allowed me to form even better relationships with my supervisors and to see even more in the hospital setting.

Advice

Put yourself out there! I gained a lot in my experience by asking questions and finding different activities for myself.

Summer Intensive Volunteer Program PCH Volunteer

June - July 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

This was my first professional experience in a hospital. I learned a lot about patient/patient family-staff interaction, HIPAA, health code, and so much more. My absolute favorite part of this experience were all the AMAZING kids I got to meet, help, and play with. I volunteered on the oncology and hematology floor and I got to meet the most lively and kindhearted children. I also got to talk to doctors, PA's, nurses, and other staff members and they gave me a lot of tips and helpful feedback. I was pleasantly surprised at how willing these medical professionals were willing to share their vast knowledge instead of not giving a volunteer the time of day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had to ability to volunteer in more parts of the hospital. I never really thought about just how many departments/jobs are needed in order to operate a well-functioning hospital. Each department/job is unique in what they do/specialize in and they all play a different yet vital role in accomplishing the same mission-- helping the patient! I was fortunate enough to have volunteered in 3 different areas, but there were so many to choose from.

Advice

If you are fortunate enough to get accepted into this volunteer program, absolutely do it!!! The kids/hospital experience really changed my life and helped me to decide exactly what I want to do and continually (3+ months later) motivates me to get there! You're required to complete 3 shifts a week, but, if your schedule allows, I recommend picking up extra shifts if possible. There wasn't one shift were I didn't leave with a smile on my face and a happy heart!!!

Phoenix Children’s Hospital Summer Volunteer

June - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The environment at Phoenix Children’s Hospital is a welcoming one, and it promotes liveliness in patients, staff and children, regardless of the severity of a situation. Every person at the hospital is willing to care for the patients in any way necessary, and the volunteer opportunities provided are diverse and enriching experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have volunteered more! Of course, HIPPA guidelines are of utmost importance, so no information about patients can be shared, but the stories and lessons that are taken away from individual experiences are fantastic.

Advice

Give everything you do at the hospital your all, as you never know what can or will change the lives of others. Even if it’s handing someone a box of tissues, it could have made that person’s day a lot easier, especially if it is a patient. Also, be kind and patient, as the kids just want to be kids, so feel free to be a kid yourself. The worst you could do at this hospital is not have fun.
