Philz Coffee

Barista

June - September 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Philz Coffee is an extremely inclusive and friendly work environment. They strive for diversity and make sure everyone feels comfortable in their workplace. Baristas at Philz create strong relationships with returning customers, which makes the job much more fun. The community in which I worked (the Castro district of SF), also paid very generously in tips on top of base salary.

What I liked

bonding with other employees, making coffee

What I wish was different

shorter commute, better pay, nicer customers, more interesting day to day operations

Advice

Don't work here if you have bills to pay. If you are in school and your parents are paying for most of your bills, it is a decent job. Otherwise, you barely get any tips and you probably won't get the hours you need.

August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved the environment and the variety of people who came into the store for their daily coffee. My coworkers were amazing and they brought so much energy and life to the store. I loved how close I got to some of these people that I now call friends.

What I wish was different

I wished I had spent my time more wisely. Working almost everyday meant I didn’t have much time for other hobbies or activities.

Advice

Work hard as much as you can but be sure to balance that out with some down time for yourself. Have fun and live life.

February - September 2018 • Fremont, CA

What I liked

It really trained my short term memory and kept me awake! Having to remember 10 custom drinks at a time with no receipt or note to reference was challenging at times but it was a lot of fun once I got the hang of it.

What I wish was different

I wish management would have been more... managerial? Sometimes they would show up drunk and be impatient with customers or bring in baggage from home and unload it on the employees. At times it felt very unproffesional but it gave me a better idea of what it is I like in a good supervisor or manager.

Advice

Find the right balance of focus for you! Once you find that, this job is both fun and easy.

What I liked

I liked the people and the environment at Philz.

What I wish was different

It is a lot of hard work and we are asked to do a lot at our highest effort. Sometimes, it is too much to ask of many individuals. So I wish that there was more staff always.

Advice

I would say that always try your best, that doesn't mean someone else's best, and always communicate with your coworkers and other around you. Do not be afraid to ask questions, people do not know how you feel if you do not tell them, don't assume.
