People Inc.

Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

What I liked the most about my internship was that the atmosphere was colorful, the people were inviting, and they included me in everything. I was able to be hands-on with the technology, assist the clients in their activities, and network with different professionals. The cool thing about the internship was that it was at an art habilitation center. I graduated from The Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts so that was a plus for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better internship.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish was different was the length of the internship. I would’ve loved to stay there longer.

Advice

One piece of advice I’d share with everyone is to take down everyone’s contact information/business card that you network with during your internship. You’ll never know when you may need them for an opportunity in the future. You also don’t know who they may know. Many people are connected and they can get you into doors you’ve never expected.

Volunteer

May 2018 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

I loved the people and the experience that I got working with People with disabilities. It changed the way I think about people with developmental disabilities.

What I wish was different

Not a thing. It was a great place to be part of at 41 palms and I still stop in twice a month too see the individuals there.

Advice

I would say do not feel intimidated by people in wheel chairs, and realize they are just like you and that they have feeling too. Be open with them and b a good friend, supporting their dreams, needs, and desires. Know that they do not want pity, they want inclusion and love more than anything. And the one thing I learned in training at people Inc. Is the word GEM: it means think when working with individuals, is it good enough for me? Treat people with respect and dignity, it is what we all expect, right?

What I wish was different

I do not think there is anything that I wish had been different.

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to not be afraid to try something new, especially if it is not in the specific field you are interested in or going to school for.

IRA Specialist

October 2017 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

I work at a medically fragile home so I love the hands-on medical aspect of the house. I love reading their diagnoses and seeing their symptoms and understanding the cause, as well as reading about their medications.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish that is different is the fact that the individuals can’t talk. It affects me when I’m not able to know if they’re comfortable in their wheelchair or in their bed so I really try my hardest to ensure that they’re comfortable.

Advice

Always treat people the way you want to be treated. Working with medically fragile individuals isnt for everyone and if you’re not ready to dedicate yourself, for the 8-16hours you’re there, into bettering these individual’s lives then it isn’t the job for you.
