PennWest University

Summer Assistant

May - August 2023 • Edinboro, PA

What I liked

Free summer housing, pay more than minimum wage, helping highschool students that were unfamiliar with college facilities

What I wish was different

More pay would have been nice for the work, especially for the duty phone which visitors would call about lockouts or maintenance issues. Campers could call you any time during the 24 hour period you had the phone, and the majority of calls were in the evening the whole way into the early morning

Advice

This is a tough job to have, just because there are so many things that can happen that you can't be trained on every scenario. If you're not strong mentally and can think clearly in stressful situations, this job may not be for you.

Camp Counselor

June - July 2018 • Clarion, PA

What I liked

I loved working with the children there. You just learn so much from being with them for six weeks. I also really loved the staff I got to work with and all the people I got the chance to meet.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been with them longer. It was really hard to leave in the end.

Advice

I would say that anybody looking to do this should know that it is an amazing experience, and one I highly recommend but also know that you can't take your work home with you. You might hear things and learn things that you will want to help and you can but you can also only do so much and at the end of the day you just can't bring it home.

Chemistry Lab Assistant

May - August 2018 • California, PA

What I liked

It was a job within my department that gained me knowledge and experience with the various instruments used in lab, as well as insight as to how labs are supposed to be run. It was also kind of a continuation of the same job I had in the spring semester so there wasn't really a learning curve.

What I wish was different

Other than not having control of the air-conditioning without having to call maintenance it was fine.

Advice

You will have to wear pants while working, so it is advisable that you invest in a few pair of more breathable pants if working over the summer If you get hot easy, as the building is old and the a/c isn't that great.
