Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

Engineering, scientific, and technical intern

May - August 2019 • Harrisburg, PA

What I liked

This internship was fun and laid back. I genuinely enjoyed working with the other employees and the work we were doing. I learned a lot about geology and its practical applications in roads we drive. I also applied my knowledge on environmental processes to conduct experiments to simulate weathering. This internship was enjoyable and allowed me to apply my education.

What I wish was different

Some weeks, few samples would come so it would get boring in the lab. I wish those slow periods did not happen as often.

Advice

Be prepared to get dirty but have fun when in the lab. Working with rocks and sodium sulfates is messy so be prepared.

Auditing Intern

May - August 2019 • Meadville, PA

What I liked

With it being my first internship I liked how accommodating they were. It was all a process of them training me to do things how they wanted them done and it really calmed me down about working after college. Showed me that I do have al the tools and my employer will teach me how to use them.

What I wish was different

Well with the Auditing department working across the state at their nearest PennDOT I only worked in person with one other auditer. So, I wish it would have been more of an office setting and not just the two of us.

Advice

I thought it was very interesting to jump into government work and see how things go in that world. It was definetly an eye opening experience that I would suggest for anyone to try!

What I liked

I liked that it was only a few miles from my house and had good pay where I could help pay my bills for college and utilities.

What I wish was different

I wish that it wasn't a male-dominated field because they tend to think less of you if you are female.

What I liked

The hands on experience allowed me to gain valuable knowledge in my career field. The atmosphere was very welcoming and I felt very welcome.
