What I liked
I liked the diverse group of co-workers I had. It felt like an environment where everyone was able to access this career, especially with different scheduling as well.
What I wish was different
The communication was lacking when I had to leave to head back to college. My manager as well as HR was no responsive there at all.
Advice
Be prepared to stand up a lot. I can stay on my feet for hours, but we're not allowed to sit down whatsoever and part-time employees don't get lunch breaks.

What I liked
It gave me an opportunity to work in a different environment with different expectations, such as reaching a quota. The work was different, being more physical than what I typically was used to.
What I wish was different
That it had not been in a factory. As a youth working there, I was not treated with the respect that should have been afforded to me. I was treated as a child who had no knowledge of how even the simplest tasks were to be performed.
Advice
It never hurts to experience this kind of work. Having a multitude of experience and proving your capabilities to rise above expectations can be monumental in proving your worth for a variety of careers.

What I liked
I liked the hands on experience. I enjoyed have the opportunity to work with publicist and brainstorm ideas for new titles being released new year. I also had the joy of getting to read different types of books and explore the world of publicity in general.
What I wish was different
One thing I wish was different is having the opportunity to connect with different departments and explore other fields of the book publishing industry.
Advice
One piece of advice would do not be afraid to communicate with your supervisor and ask questions. I was able to establish a very good relationship with my supervisor and I enjoyed the idea of asking questions and gaining more knowledge. My supervisor was more than happy to share her experience in the publishing world and we were able to share some laughs here and there.

What I liked
I liked getting to work alongside dedicated and passionate people. They always gave me great advice and some interesting projects to work on. I got to spearhead by own marketing initiative for one of their books (of course under their supervision)
What I wish was different
I wish I had less busy work--but hey, that's the life of an intern. The workplace was also not very diverse and the environment was isolating.
Advice
Don't go in expecting to love every part of the job. It's all a learning experience and it's just as important to figure out what you don't enjoy as it is to figure out what you enjoy. Also always be very transparent with your boss about your abilities/time and always ask for more work if you find you're finishing everything before their due dates.

What I liked
What wasn't there to love? Penguin is an incredible employer, I felt that I was learning new things each day, but still confident in my own contributions. My primary responsibility was to proofread and write back cover copy, so I spent most of the day reading our publications.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been able to go in more days each week. Communication was pretty slow between myself and the company, it took three interviews to get the job. The main issue was that I had accepted a promotion at my part-time job before Penguin informed me I got the internship - so scheduling was a little tough for a minute.
Advice
Do not be afraid to talk to your co-workers and ask questions. That includes things that might make you feel a bit silly, like what specific terms they're using mean! You might worry that you're bothering people by having a conversation, but keep telling yourself that isn't the case. If they can't talk, they will let you know. You don't have to be and expert and you don't have to be perfect - but you do have to learn and make a good impression.
