I liked being able to help patients and make a difference in their lives. I also enjoyed being immersed in the hospital setting.
What I wish was different
The commute was a little too long.

Medical Technologist - Student Intern
November 2016 - January 2017 • Riverhead, NY
What I liked
I interned as part of the SBU Clinical Laboratory Sciences program. I liked that most of the employees were very open to training and going out of their way to make sure I learned.
What I wish was different
I wish that the assignments had been better structured, because some of the clinical assignments I had to do (given by SBU) related more to the ASCP test we take at the end of school rather than what I was doing at the internship.
Advice
I would tell a future intern to treat the internship, even though it is unpaid, as a full-time job. This can involve asking questions to make sure you understand everything rather than just letting things slide because it's an internship, and also getting as much hands-on experience as you can. Not only does this give you good experience in the field you want to work in, but it can make an impression on the institution so that they will offer you a job when you're done with school.
