Software Coop

What I liked

I liked the people that I worked with, including the interns and mentors. I also loved that we got to build a web app start to finish and have our own project, rather than do random disconnected tasks

What I wish was different

I wish it had been more organized, onboarding was difficult

Advice

I gained a lot by being open minded and allowing others to teach me things or learning new things on my own that helped with the internship

Software Developer Co-op

May - December 2020 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

1. Lots of skilled people to learn from during the internship 2. Good quality code-base (technology is taken seriously here) 3. Seniors cared about giving quality development work to interns. 4. Managers take serious care of interns by providing them all logistical support for tech career advancement (BIG PLUS)

What I wish was different

Despite all the good things Paychex has to offer for a tech career, there are some serious shortcomings - The company and management's mindset is extremely cheap, not frugal. You will experience this in almost everything - a. The pay rate is lowest in Rochester. (18/hr for undergrad and 21/hr for grads, many other companies offer 24 - 28/hr) b. Roughly 50% of the full time employees and all interns are hired as contractor (who do not get any benefits eg - 401k company sponsored events etc) you can feel a clear difference in the treatment. Upon asking a manager why so, he answered hiring more direct employees are liability for the company (RED FLAG) c. Almost, no (or maybe 1/yr) team outings, events, offsite , so if you are young and looking for fun loving workplace, this is a serious no go. d. Absolutely, no perks. There is only one coffee flavor of coffee and a cheap creamer that you have to live by. Lastly, do not expect you will be able to work / contribute to any open source projects while working here. You will be expected to work only for the company work even in supplemental time.

Advice

It's a good place to intern for summer internship, not for 8 months coop. If you are ambitious looking big tech career, this is not the place. Similarly, for international students, unless you are desperate for a job, no go.

Software Developer Intern

January - May 2019 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

I was encouraged to take ownership of all the tasks I was working on. I had opportunities to work on development heavy tasks and my code is in production. My manager made sure I am able to learn what I wanted to and get a full co-op experience while also receiving feedback on how to approach interviews during the 1-1 sessions.

Digital Marketing Intern

June 2018 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

The people I got to work with at Paychex helped me get more out of my time there. Everyone there was more than willing to sit down and talk to me. They went above and beyond my expectations, they were willing to spend the time and talk to me about anything I didn't understand. Being in a corporate environment things move quickly and its easy to get lost. I had the opportunity to sit in on meetings but tended to get lost quickly in what they were talking about. So them taking the time to explain concepts to me helped me get the best out of my experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

If i could give one piece of advice it would be to not be afraid to ask questions. You only get out of an internship what you are willing to put in. Talk to the people around you and see what they think about their job. what do they like, what don't they like, figure out if its something you want to do in the future. And don't be afraid to ask for help, its better to ask for help and do something the right way then to sit there confused and hope you're doing it correct.
