Patriots Ghana

Human Rights Project Coordinator

May - August 2019 • Kasoa, Central Region

What I liked

I loved being immersed into a different culture, and experiencing the challenge of adapting to a new environment. The work we did impacted the lives of children and their families to improve their living, education, and economic situation for the future generations.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been a little better prepared for the weather, food, and ailments. Next time I will bring other necessities such as a bigger water bottle, a variety of bags, medicine, and comfort foods. these items will help ease the physical and emotional attributes that can never be anticipated for a trip.

Advice

Never have any expectations, come in with an open mind and be ready to learn. holding expectations allows the opportunity for disappointment.

Microfinance Project Director

July - August 2019 • New Glasgow, Nova Scotia

What I liked

I love the work that i did over there! During my time I collaborate with a team to develop demand-driven workshops on financial literacy subject such as bookkeeping, budgeting, business plans, digital financial services, savings, etc. I have work with the program director Emmanuel Yamoah to develop project evaluation as well ac conducting baseline research in new communities for potential benefactors of the micro-finance projects.  I am glad that I had the opportunity to impact a community positively.

What I wish was different

I wish i knew the local language better. Maybe if there was a PDF format that teach students the basic before they travel to Ghana, this would have help with better communication. Effective communication can be a great mechanisms for working in diverse environments. PS: The location of the internship was Ghana in West Africa. I was unable to put the location in the survey.

Advice

Traveling abroad can be very scary. My advice is to take a chance and explore the world. Working abroad with women entrepreneurs from rural city have helped me developed into an open-minded individual that creatively overcome challenges and continuously strive to make every interaction the basis for innovation and continuous learning.  I advice everyone to challenges themselves to become greater leader.
