PARTNERSHIP FOR A HEALTHY LINCOLN

Wellness Club Leader

January 2022 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

Serving as an AmeriCrops member with PHL has been one of the most challenging yet fulfilling job I have worked. Getting to go out into my community and work with the students and teach them about healthy living has been so impactful and I have enjoyed every minute of it. This job also offers flexible hours and the benefits AmeriCorps provides as well made this experience all the better.

What I wish was different

Nothing. Anna and Zaria are so easy to work and communicate with. The benefits are great and I get to go out and make an impact on my community.

Advice

You get out what you put in. Some days might be more challenging than others, but if you go in with an open mind and a drive to make a difference, the students will love you for it, and you will see the changes being made.

What I liked

This experience allowed me to grow my leadership skills as I lead elementary aged students at after school clubs on a weekly basis. I learned more in depth about the topics of nutrition, exercise and gardening. I was given the opportunity to attend events that give back to the community of Lincoln. This organization emphasizes the importance of being a team player and working with other members to find solutions to every situation.

Wellness Club Leader

September 2022 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

I loved being able to connect with the community in a variety of ways. As a club leader, you are able to impact students lives through cooking, gardening, and physical activity clubs. You are also able to be involved with events throughout the community, which I have loved being apart of! Everyone who I have came in contact with have been very kind and always willing to help.

What I wish was different

There really hasn’t been anything I would change about this experience! It has been such a great experience as a senior in college!

Advice

Make sure to be organized, there are many clubs, meetings, and events that are going on so keep track of that! Having fun with the kids is another big one, kids are kids and when you have fun, they will also have so much more fun as well!

Wellness Club Leader

August 2022 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

This job is incredible. You are able to serve elementary school students in multiple different schools around Lincoln--teaching them about healthy living through gardening, cooking, and PE clubs. This role is very flexible (I could take 18 credit hours and still make three clubs a week work) and extremely rewarding. In addition to organizing the after-school clubs, Anna sets up very useful team trainings with non-profits/speakers/CLC staff from around Lincoln. As someone studying Elementary Education, I feel as though I have had the opportunity to connect with administrators and staff from a TON of different schools which will be very useful in the future. I love the people working at this company, and this job is an absolute dream!

What I wish was different

At times, it was a bit overwhelming to fit extra community events/clubs into my schedule. To avoid this, I tried my best to communicate effectively with other AmeriCorps members & Anna.

Advice

Attend as many events/meetings/trainings/clubs as possible! This is a year of service, and you will get out of it what you put into it!

Wellness Club Leader

January 2023 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

This position helped me be more involved within the Lincoln community. I can see the impact I am making on the kids every club, and I look forward to building relationships with my coworkers and students everyday. This position has helped improve my leadership skills and confidence in front of groups.

What I wish was different

Anna does an AMAZING job at keeping things organized and communicating dates for events. Sometimes, especially through the training process, things can feel a little overwhelming and like a bigger time commitment then what is initially implied. However, once you get into the swing of things it is easy to keep track of it all.

Advice

This experience has made me more open minded to the youth of my area. Advice I would give is to know when to be patient with a kid or when to appropriately enforce rules.

School Wellness Leader

January 2021 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

What I like about being a School Wellness Leader is that you are impacting so many kids after school. Instead of being at one school you have the opportunity to be at multiple schools throughout the week leading and impacting kids. Another thing I like is being able to make my own schedule. Its a very flexible job and works with students schedules really well!

What I wish was different

There is nothing specific that I wish was different. Being a School Wellness Leader can have its challenges, but its super rewarding seeing the kids learn from the clubs and have so much fun doing it!

Advice

One piece of advice would be that don't let working with kids after school discourage you. Its a lot of fun! Majority of the times it's a team effort leading clubs and you will be well trained for leading the after school clubs.
