I suggest taking any opportunity you are offered to expand the breadth of your experience. You cannot know how you'll feel about a type of work until you've done it.

FP&A Intern

June - August 2020 • Hollister, CA

What I liked

I was partnered with the business unit controller so I saw how each FP&A associate for each business unit delivered their program reviews and the business unit controller compiled that information to work alongside the finance director and the site's general manager to forecast future revenue and strategies operations.

What I wish was different

My internship focused on writing a series of VBA macros to automate the generation of various daily/weekly/monthly reports. I wish my internship was more focused on finance topics such as building models or cost analysis.

Advice

With many companies still working from home it is important to be self-reliant, resourceful, and self-motivated. It is easy to lose focus or be distracted when working from home, but ask for more projects or to take on and learn more difficult tasks.

Design Engineer Intern

June - September 2018 • Hollister, CA

What I liked

We worked on multiple real world projects that had impacts on both civilian and government projects. They treated us like full employees and tasked us with projects that were challenging but within the scope of my skill. The 4-10 hour work week was definitely a positive of this internship as well.

Health, Environment and Safety Specialist Intern

June - September 2019 • Hollister, CA

What I liked

I worked as an intern for Pac Sci EMC over the summer of 2019. I had an excellent time and was able to gain incredible experience. I worked in the Environmental Health and Safety department. My supervisor was incredible both in terms of being helpful when I needed guidance, but also by giving me the ability to take on challenging assignments. If I felt that there was an idea worth exploring; he would give me the time to study the option, as long as the standard duties were being finished on schedule. In the EHS Department, we have to work across departments to ensure compliance for the entire facility. This allowed me to see many different components of the manufacturing floor as well as many of the other buildings outside the typical purview of interns. The company also hosted Lunch and Learns which were great chances to talk to others within the company and pick their brains. Overall, this was an incredible experience and I would highly recommend it to any engineer.

What I wish was different

The lunch and learns were incredible. Having more of them would be great.

Advice

Be self motivated. If you are not willing to drive the projects you are interested in, they will fall by the way side.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2019 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

I encountered a lot of the business side for a manufacturing company. My main function was in the accounting department where I concentrated on Accounts Receivables and SOX testing. The other jobs and internships I had never showed me what a manufacturing business is like, so I like that perspective. In addition to accounting, I was also able to see the supply chain operations and the different metrics used internally to track how well the company is doing. It gave me a well rounded business experience, not just accounting.

What I wish was different

The internship was long compared to other summer internships. It was 14 weeks, so it did not allow me to do much before or after the internship, but overall, it helped give me great experiences in accounting. I got to work on process improvement initiatives and see many accounting functions throughout my time.

Advice

Explore. Be curious and be a sponge. Really ask questions about why things are done the way they are done. Also, see if you can participate in other meetings besides just the department you were hired in. Having a holistic views helps you make good business decisions and see room for improvement where others that are siloed in one department cannot see.
