What I liked

I like that I am able to become more well-rounded as it pertains to the business world. When business majors enter the workspace, it’s not all about their chosen major. Rather, a combination of various skills, departments, and knowledge. So, while I am a Marketing major I have been able to use my talents and learn different perspectives in the HR | Early Career environment.

What I wish was different

I do not wish anything was different. I do wish my school schedule was a bit different so that I could put more hours into the part-time internship.

Advice

Don’t be scared or turn down something just because it doesn’t follow the exact plan you have in your mind. You never know what skills you will learn and networks you will create.

What I liked

The program was great and the people made sure that I was successful with my project. The project is well structured and you have guidance throughout your internship. They often talk about the full time opportunity and tell the student about the opportunity the company has. There is also a lot of social event happening a lot.

What I wish was different

Everything was perfect for me. I wish everyone to try an internship at Owens Corning. there is a good balance between social experience and your professional experience.

Advice

Make sure that you listen to your manager. Give 1000000% of yourself to make sure you get the most out of it. Always ask for guidance. Give yourself the chance to work hard and make the right connections. Enjoy your time while interning. I think it is important to enjoy what you are doing. Find a way to enjoy your work. The last thing is if you are an international student, say Yess to every opportunity that is being presented to you that is withing your reach, to become successful.

Manufacturing Leadership Intern

What I liked

I was given a good amount of responsibility and freedom within my projects. I was the expert on my projects, and had weekly update meetings with the entire plant staff to update and share my progress. I was able to work with so many different people and felt my contributions improved the Atlanta plant.

What I wish was different

More opportunities to help lead different small projects throughout the plant, and learning more about the TPM program.

Advice

Never be afraid to travel to a new place, even if it’s 10 hours away from home! The freedom and responsibility of living in a big city was incredible, and an experience I will never forget!

Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

So many opportunities to be involved and engaged with not only the company and upper leadership, but also with your intern class: -Annual Softball Game -Day of Service -Weekly IM Volleyball -Habitat Service Sites -City of Toledo hosts many early career/young professional events to see the city and meet other interns -baseball outing -Plenty of opportunity for mentoring

What I wish was different

The culture is great, especially for interns, but can be a little challenging to see how your project is impacting the company. It will really put you out of your comfort zone, which is good growth, but you have to be open for it right away.

Advice

The company really wants you to learn and be a part of the culture, and gives you all the resources to make that happen, but it really is what you make it. Make sure you are scheduling a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with your manager to check-in and set expectations, if you are concerned about your project, or not getting something out of it-tell them! They want to help so use them.

What I liked

I was the direct lead for the projects I was assigned. I was able to make an actual impact on the current employees on a daily basis and long term. The project I was assigned is going to save the company over $2 mil in the next couple years. At the end of the internship, we are flown to headquarters (Toledo, OH) and give a final presentation to the HR Steering team. During that visit we also meet other interns from other departments and go to networking events. It was a great experience.

What I wish was different

The only thing I do not particularly like is the casual dress that is implemented in the plant environment because I like to dress up in business casual. But, there is a strict dress code at the plant locations due to safety. So it is understandable.

Advice

Learn the manufacturing process as soon as possible. Ask questions about the process. Go onto the manufacturing floor and talk to every employee that you possibly can as soon as you can. The earlier you understand the process and develop those relationships the easier it is to implement your projects or any change of management.

What I liked

The structure of the internship made it so that I had some really cool projects that I got to work on right from the start. They didn't have to figure out what to do with me and gave me enough guidance to feel confident that I could complete the goals set out for me from the start.

What I wish was different

I would have benefited from a couple more weeks, but other than that the experience was great.

Advice

Jump right it and know that they want you to succeed. Don't be afraid to ask questions but be proactive and don't wait to be told how to do everything.

What I liked

There is so much I liked about this internship experience. It was a well-rounded 3 months that offered exposure to many fields in the supply chain industry. I drove results for the company through the meaningful project that was given. I was exposed to communicating to professionals and specialists of all areas and of different positions within the company. I also learned about the city of Toledo after participating in many social and networking events around the city. We also had the option to give back to this city of Toledo through many volunteering opportunities. Overall, an amazing experience with Owens Corning!

What I wish was different

I do not wish much was different. I had an amazing experience.

Advice

I would say get out of that comfort zone!! I made amazing relationships with so many professionals from OC and still keep in contact. They truly care about my career growth AND personal growth. They took the time to meet with me and answer my never-ending questions! I pushed myself to make great relationships and attend events that i would not normally attend. I left the internship with many intern friends, relationships built, and learned so much about myself personally and professionally! There is so much beauty and learning opportunities outside of what we are most comfortable with! Take a dip into the unknown territory:)

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with but I mostly enjoyed working in a plant. It is a completely different setting from a corporate desk job and allows you to really understand the business.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more people my age at the site and that the work felt more meaningful. OC prides themselves on giving interns projects that actually make a difference in the company but I struggled to see the impact of my projects.

Advice

The more you get out of your comfort zone and push yourself to do different things, the more you will learn and the more experiences OC will give you.

What I liked

Great community and culture at the plant. Senior engineers nod plant leaders were invested in my development more than seeing what results I could bring.

What I wish was different

I wasn’t able to gain access to one part of the plant due to PAPR certification. I wish I could have been able to get that.

Advice

Bet on yourself and be proud of the education you have here at Dordt. In my intern program at OC I was the only one not from a massive university. It made me proud of where I came from and I wanted to show all that my education had given to me. Don’t be intimidated by big names.

Always be prepared. Once you find out your role make sure you know as much as you can before you get there. Preparation is key.
