parts handler

May - August 2023 • Bloomfield, CT

What I liked

It was a pleasure working with them, and I enjoyed the environment they have

What I wish was different

I noticed that this job was initially described as summer help, which turned out to be more of a parts-handling role rather than an engineering internship. I was hoping for an opportunity to gain some exposure to engineering during the last week or two of my tenure to get a taste of what an engineering internship entails.

Advice

Even though I knew this wasn't initially an engineering internship, I remained dedicated to my work, putting in a lot of effort, and consistently proving my abilities. The manager there recognized my hard work and expressed a willingness to help me secure an engineering internship if it was available the following summer. This experience taught me that sometimes in life, you might find yourself in a job you didn't initially desire, but by continually improving yourself and demonstrating your potential, others will notice your capabilities and open up opportunities you didn't expect. So, don't feel disheartened by challenging situations; they can ultimately benefit you in the future.

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work hands-on in the lab spaces. Additionally, I had an amazing mentor and team, who made sure I was engaged throughout my internship, helped me understand new concepts, and generally gave great advice. I also became very close with the other interns and would often hang out with them during and after work.

What I wish was different

After COVID, the location no longer has a cafeteria.

Process Engineering Intern

June - July 2020 • Florence, SC

What I liked

Otis went above & beyond to accommodate their interns, with such unprecedented circumstances. I was able to have meaningful projects and mentorship even in a remote atmosphere. The company culture is great, and you can tell everyone working for Otis loves their job.

What I wish was different

Due to Covid, this internship was remote. I wish things had been different so that I could have had a more hands on experience.

Advice

Write down everything! If you hear a term you don't know, write it down & ask about it! If you have an idea, write it down & mention it to your supervisor.

Sales Intern

June - September 2017 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Very supportive management. Tight-knit group of employees, they took me under their wing and helped me along, became my friends. Great learning experience, lots of autonomy/independence in the internship. Tough projects actually made me use my cal poly knowledge.

What I wish was different

It was a smaller office, I wish it was a bigger location.

Advice

Never underestimate the power of communication, if you need help, just talk to your supervisor or the boss above him. Also, there’s no time to be a perfectionist in a 9-5 job, do your best and move on or you’ll be there until nighttime.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Florence, SC

What I liked

Great environment full of really nice people. Plenty of potential improvements within the factory. Rewarding and worthwhile engineering work.

What I wish was different

Housing was tough and it would have been nice to experience other departments.

Advice

Do something you are uncomfortable with. And go out on the factory floor to see how things are made. Both of these things will make you a better engineer.
