Osborn Engineering

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I liked the environment. It was a great learning experience because everyone around me was dedicated to me evolving as an engineer. There was a weekly meeting where all the interns from every discipline got together for lunch and talked through what they learned or what they didn't understand. My opinion felt truly considered, and being the only Electrical intern, I was able to have one on one time with my manager, as well as accompany colleagues to on-site visits. I visited the Museum of Natural history, PNC Bank tower, and Cuyahoga Community College, just to name a few. It was truly a dream come true to see the behind-the-scenes of the places that inspired me to be an engineer in the first place.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had previous experience in the field of engineering consulting. There was so much useful knowledge I can grasp now that I have experience, that just flew over my head while I was learning the basics. We predominantly used AutoCAD to make the drawings, and a lot of my time was spent learning the ins and outs of AutoCAD rather than focusing on the engineering aspect of things, but this was a necessary first step to start in this field.

Advice

I knew asking questions was important, but this experience solidified just how important it was. After the Summer I got back to school and a few of my friends spent their Summer working similar internships where they learned a fraction of what I did. I learned as much as I did because I was always pestering my colleagues with questions. No matter how trivial they may have seemed, I always let them fly. My coworker's quickly recognized this trait, and as soon as they got done explaining something to me, they knew I had a list of a dozen of questions I wanted to ask, and I am better because of it. In short, be eager to learn and don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they may seem trivial. It will not only be useful to add the bits of information to your repertoire, but it helps people around you solidify their understanding on the matter. They say you truly know your stuff if you can teach it proficiently.

The people there were fantastic, and spending a lot of time in downtown Cleveland was eye opening.

What I wish was different

I wish it was closer to my home (Warren Ohio). From my house it was an hour drive.

Advice

If you are going to start in a new industry, ask as many questions as possible. If you do that, you will increase your knowledge and retention by a large margin.
