What I liked
The fact that I was using data science to make decisions that have a direct affect on people’s lives, rather than decisions that help a company make more money
What I wish was different
I wish I had been given more responsibility, they expected me to be less skilled than I actually am, so there was some scrambling that had to happen for me to get on appropriate projects.
Advice
Learn as much about the field before you start your job. The biggest learning curve at my job was not the technical stuff, but it was learning how government research works, how the social welfare system was structured, how the foster care system was structured, etc.
