Summer Intern

June - August 2021 • North Powder, OR

What I liked

I got to work outside all day, every day. I had a chance to use skills I had learned in the classroom in a real field setting. I learned a lot of new plant species, drive an ATV over nasty terrain and meet some delightful people.

What I wish was different

I was actually hired to collect data for a grazing management plan. That took me about two weeks of my ten week internship. I wish the internship had been more time spent on the data collection.

Advice

If you can set your own starting hour, start at five! The summer heat is oppressive and the crazy early start means you are done before the hottest part of the day.

Wildlife Research Intern

June - September 2019 • Central Point, OR

What I liked

This internship gave me great hands-on training in capturing and tagging deer.

What I wish was different

The job entails a lot of driving to monitor the study animals. It would be nice if I hadn't spent so many hours driving, but that's just the nature of the research.

Advice

Make sure to get certified in mammal capture and immobilization!
