Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Optoro’s summer dev program was been different from other internships I’ve done because it gave so much autonomy to its interns, and really treated them as if they were actual employees at the company. I felt like I could talk with anyone working next to me and have something to contribute. I also learnt how to cooperate, communicate, and solve problems that at first seemed impossibly huge, but ended up being doable through collaboration and some healthy Stack Overflowing.

What I wish was different

Some things that weren’t so great about the program is that it took a long time to get the full idea about Optoro's mission, and even longer to get oriented with specific projects and their codebases. I would have appreciated a technical training section, where we could go through the structure of each project in brief to save hours of sifting through files and asking questions until we found out where everything was and how it worked.

Advice

I learnt more technical coding and software engineering skills than I could have imagined at the start of the summer, met people that have changed my life, and am grateful to have has the opportunity to work with some of the smartest minds and most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
