I liked looking at all of the animals everyday on the way to my work station. I loved meeting people from all over the world that came to Omaha to visit the Zoo.
What I wish was different
I wish some days weren't so hot outside.
Advice
Always be kind to whoever you meet. Having good relationships can lead to a happy work environment.

Docent
February 2019 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
I love sharing information about wildlife conservation and ecosystem management. It gives me great joy to see people get excited about animal facts and biology.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more time to volunteer. I love the zoo and the Lee G Simmons Wildlife Conservation Park where I am also a volunteer docent going on 3 years now.
Advice
Be respectful of the animals and their environment. They are wild animals and not pets and the habitats they are in are their homes so STOP TAPPING ON THE GLASS!

Desert Dome Intern
May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
Learning about all the different animals and getting to meet new people and getting to see the little quirks of every animal and helping others understand what zoos do for animals that can't be released back into the wild.
What I wish was different
I wish that we were given a better description of how well we did and that we were given more responsibility on the job after a month of working there and proving ourselves.
Advice
It's a lot of hard work, and it's not about playing and or petting the animals because at the end of the day they are wild animals and you're there to learn how to take care of them and make their lives as enriching as it can be while in captivity. So, if you don't want to do that, then I do not recommend this internship.

Browse Intern
May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
Seeing behind the scenes at the Zoo. Learning more about nutrition, conservation, and environmental efforts. Making connections for potential jobs after graduation.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been paid.
Advice
It’s worth it! I worked every single day 8-9 hours for 3 months straight between the Zoo as an unpaid intern and my regular paid job to afford bills and I don’t regret it, even though it was tough.

Animal Care Intern
May - August 2018 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
I loved the variability in my day to day at the zoo, as well as the vast amount of things I got to do from training animals, handling them, seaming exhibits, and preparing diets.
What I wish was different
I do wish I got to intern at some other parts of the zoo to see how they operate instead of putting my entire summer into one department.
Advice
Get to know the keepers as well as you can, if you do it will make your summer much better.

Behavioral Husbandry and Welfare Intern
May - August 2018 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
I enjoyed the variety of tasks! I got to watch zebra training sessions and nurse shark training sessions. I also helped with a few behavioral studies of one of the resident fossas and white-throat monitors. I was also on Excel a lot, helping with quarterly enrichment reports, letting each area know how much enrichment they provided for their animals.
