Hostess

June 2018 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

Being able to see the way my favorite restaurant functions behind closed doors.

What I wish was different

Rather than having to stay on our feet all the time, we should be able to have chairs or not be reprimanded for sitting down - most of the employees work on their feet for up to twelve hours multiple days in a row.

Advice

You never know what someone might be going through before they walked in through the doors. So it's best to just remain calm, even when they're acting upset and are in your face, because something horrible could have happened to them beforehand to make them act that way.

Certified Trainer

April 2016 • Opelika, AL

What I liked

At Olive Garden, I work with a lot of other students, as well as others who are not pursuing degrees. They have worked with my school schedule since I began working there. There are plenty of opportunities to move up or around throughout the restaurant.

What I wish was different

I wish we were not understaffed in certain positions, so I could take more days off if needed for school and personal health. You can still take days off if needed, it would just be easier to find a replacement if we had a few more employees.

Advice

Olive Garden is a great family that wants to see you succeed. If you need anything, do not be afraid to ask. I tore my ACL in the spring of 2018, and management did their best to find a job for me so I could continue to work while I was recovering.

Waitress

June 2019 • Prosper, TX

What I liked

As a waitress at Olive Garden, my primary role is to take orders and deliver them. However, I am also dedicated to making sure the atmosphere at my job is open and welcoming, to both guests and my coworkers. I love developing friendships with my coworkers that allow us to rely on each other when the job gets difficult, and I enjoy seeing a guest leave with a smile on their face. This job continues to teach me valuable skills, such as team-building, stress management, and memorization

What I wish was different

I have zero complaints at this job - though obviously, everyone has room to go in their professional skills and ability to contribute to the efficiency of the store (including me!)

Advice

Networking is a big but often underrated part of waitressing. Building trust with your coworkers makes your job incredibly easier - you'll have the peace and confidence that if you suddenly get busy, and one customer makes a lot of requests, your friends have your back and will run your food to other tables if you need it.
