What I liked

Very interesting and enlightening experience shadowing providers and working in a clinic!

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve spent more time interning, but I was also taking classes at the time.

Advice

Take advantage of the providers’ knowledge of the process and the practice.

What I liked

I like the attitude most dentists have at this clinic. They always strive to teach and give the opportunity to help us as undergrads learn and become more and more fluent in dentistry.

What I wish was different

I wish we could handle more dental instruments. As it could help us prepare for dental school on just another level. Rather than being just prepared by knowing some procedures but knowing each instrument and what they are used for too!

Advice

To always ask questions and to always seek out ways you can help the doctor or the dental assistants. As long as you want to be there you’ll do fantastic.

Dental Intern

June - December 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

What I wish was different

I wish I got more hands on learning instead of just watching the dentists at work. I understand what this position entailed and it was mainly just shadowing but assisting the dentist would have been cool too.

Advice

Don't expect to be assisting the dentist. It's mainly a shadowing experience.

What I liked

I liked the doctor patient interactions in this office. Everyone is so nice and considerate and culturally aware of the patients. The main focus is to provide the best possible treatment for each patient while accounting for practicality. I also liked the clear communication between the doctor and patients and if the patient didnt understand or had questions, the doctor was able to explain it in a different manner.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more hands on experience in the room other cleaning up and putting the room back together. I would have like to be more involved in assisting the dentist but I understand that it was only a shadowing position.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Everyone is there to help you learn about this field and what it entails so don't hold back about wanting to learn more.

What I liked

I loved shadowing the dentists and learning more about dental procedures. Not only was I able to watch how a procedure was taken place, but also why it was done and the background of different cases. Furthermore, since I am interested in pediatric dentistry, watching how the pedodontist interacted with the patients was extremely helpful and rewarding. In addition, when I was lucky enough to assist in some procedures, I was able to look at the teeth up close and see what the dentist was diagnosing/fixing.

What I wish was different

None! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Communicare Dental and cannot wait to come back for a 2nd quarter.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to be proactive. Watching dental procedures and asking a lot of questions will enhance one's experience. Plus, it will solidify if they are certain in pursuing this field.
