aquatic biology research assistant

What I liked

I need experience I found this summer was working in the field including sampling zooplankton, sampling days, getting nutrient data from our test sites. Something different I enjoyed was answering the same question for weeks and working toward it. My favorite part of the experience was presenting our predictions and experimental design at the beginning of the summer to our research cohort, then presenting our findings via poster and Q&A panel at a symposium hosted by our university.

What I wish was different

I came into the summer research off a really tough academic year. Jumping right into research was mentally challenging. Not only did I learn a lot about the scientific process, I learned about myself and what I need to recharge my mental health.

Advice

Ask yourself questions not related to the topic you're studying such as, what am I enjoying about the work I am doing? How do these skills apply to other fields (resume strengths)? And what techniques am I building to be a better scientist (experimental techniques, critical thinking, etc.)? Also, have fun with it!

Summer Science Researcher

Working with my professor and mentor, and brainstorming different ways to implement artificial intelligence methods.

What I wish was different

Better communication and social connection.

Advice

Do not over work in the beginning weeks and slack off in the last few, which are quite critical.

I enjoyed learning how research within astronomy and generally learning more about the night sky.

I wish we had more cloudless nights but we have no control over that.

Student Researcher

What I liked

I enjoyed learning the various methods and processes that go into photometry. I got hands on experience in a field I am interested in, which further sparked my interest in Astrophysics.

What I wish was different

I wish I was on campus to use the telescope for the SSRP, but unfortunately due to COVID-19, I was unable to stay here over the winter. Our mentor did an outstanding job in making the research project remote.

What I liked

The work experience is great, and I felt like accounting suits well with me. Everyone here is very willing to help and gives me advice about the work, etc. It's very enjoyable working.

Do your best and try to do something a bit more than what they ask you, like adding a convenient way to view the excel file you created.

Cooking Matters Intern

What I liked

I liked how we got to work with many different people and in many different areas of the community. We taught cooking matters classes, cooked meals to donate to the community, prepared recipe samples for the local farmers market and performed cooking demonstrations at People in Need. Each week of the summer looked different, and I got a lot of valuable experience in the community.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would share that you should always be prepared for anything! When you are working with people, things don't always go as planned. Stay on your toes and everything will work out!
