Office of U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth

Senate Intern

August 2018 - May 2019 • Carbondale, IL

What I liked

I liked participating in community outreach events. It showed me there was more going on in my community than meets the eye.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have actually spent time with the Senator because I look up to and respect her so much.

Advice

If you get the honor to intern at this office, put your entire heart into it. What you put into it is what you'll get out of it.

Operations/Legislative Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

During the internship I was exposed to a variety of jobs within the office which helped me figure out what departments or roles I may be interested in down the road.

Advice

Take advantage of all of the connections that you can access from being in such close proximity to a ton of interesting professionals! Everyone who I met had taken a different path to the Hill and it was fascinating to meet people with such a variety of experiences; these interactions helped me to think about what I'd like my own career path to look like and recognize that said path may not necessarily be linear.

Legislative Intern

July - August 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This was a fantastic experience because I was able to see first-hand how Capitol Hill operates on a daily basis. I was also able to attend hearings regularly and conduct research on these issues while observing other aspects of government.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked on the Hill for a longer period when the Senate was in session.

Advice

Go to as many hearings and events as possible and don't be afraid to talk to higher level staff.
