I got to interact with constituents every day and learned more about the issues they face with the immigration system. I also learned how ineffective and counterproductive it can be. While a lot of the stories I heard were sad, it allowed me to gain empathy for the problems that others often face during the naturalization process.
What I wish was different
I do wish I could have been assigned more projects or been involved in the community. As the only intern for that semester, I was given a lot of basic office and secretarial work.
Advice
Do not be afraid to speak up and ask questions. If you are curious about a particular process, ask about it. Also, being an intern in an office like that can sometimes make you feel invisible. Fight against that and make your presence known.
