Ocean Spray

Integrated Pest Management Scout

May - August 2021 • Babcock, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed working for Ocean Spray. They were a very reasonable and supportive work environment, with great employees. My bosses were easy to talk to and believed in my skillset and trusted my judgment. I also enjoyed the ever-changing nature of the job, as my days were never the same. Additionally, the hours were also great. I was able to choose a schedule that best fits my lifestyle, while also getting plenty of hours.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different was how much alone time I spent. My job consisted primarily of independent research and data collection. Because of this, I worked by myself most of the time with little to no human contact.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to make sure that you are comfortable being outside with wildlife all day. This job is not for someone who is afraid of getting dirty, or who is not a fan of insects.

Packaging Development Co-Op

June - December 2016 • Lakeville, MA

What I liked

Ocean Spray has a great dynamic. First of all, they're a cooperative, which means they're owned by the farmers, rather than being a publicly or privately owned company. Second, the R&D team that they have there is amazing. Everyone within R&D thrives off of innovation and understanding what they can do to improve. For packaging specifically, the team is great. There's a mix of people, some that have worked for Ocean Spray for over 20 years, and some that have worked at various other companies. With all of that experience and knowledge, the team works hard to understand how to better the company by creating well thought out and strong packaging inputs.

What I wish was different

I think that as a co-op it can get lonely, especially since there are only a few, and usually the other interns there were living at home or were from the area, so it could be hard to find something to do with people.

Advice

Keep your mind open, and always ask for more work if you don't think you have enough to do. I think once you become comfortable with the company, you should work hard to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and learn all the things that Ocean Spray has to offer. Especially learning what other people do that aren't in R&D!

Process Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Lakeville, MA

What I liked

It was a really good hands-on introduction to the early stages of a potential adjustment to an existing process. The R&D Department members were very friendly and will to help if you had a question.
