Nucor Raw Materials

HR Recruiting Intern

May 2021 - April 2022 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I learned a lot of skills that were taught by my manager but also learned in the classroom. I learned about multiple aspects of the business in conversations with all my coworkers. While I was interning, everyday was different. The culture created here is so welcoming. DJJ invests in its interns and full-time employees long-term. They were very flexible with my hours during taking classes during the fall and spring semesters as well. They understood the importance of my time spent learning in the classroom.

What I wish was different

Since I was working part-time during the school semesters, it was hard to catch up on the days I missed at times, but I worked with my manager to create a better system for myself since the hours were limited.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can! The more questions you can ask from any part of the business will grow your knowledge and understanding of the business!

Metals Group - Brokerage Intern

June 2020 • Newport, KY

What I liked

- I like the ability to make an impact as an intern through various projects and calls. - I like the Company culture. The culture is encouraging but also sets expectations that you do good work.

What I wish was different

Due to Covid-19, I have not had the chance to visit our customer's scrap yards.

Advice

At the start of your internship, there is a lot of information so you can feel a little overwhelmed. One piece of advice I would give is to take notes on everything you hear in the conference calls and around the office. In addition, I think asking questions will go a long way in helping you understand the Scrap Metal industry and its language.

Environmental Intern

May 2019 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

The other members of the Environmental Department are extremely helpful and interested in educating and assisting their Interns. I think I got a lot of in-depth and practical experience. It was definitely challenging, but it's a good representation of what the expectations would be for an Environmental Manager and/or other forms of compliance professionals. I would highly recommend the internship to anyone who is interested in compliance work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more available during the school year for full days. A big part of the job is traveling to facilities and having limited time really detracts from your ability to do that, so I think I missed out on some good opportunities in the fall during end-of-year audits.

Advice

When you first start, and this probably applies to almost any internship, you'll probably feel very overwhelmed. Don't be afraid to ask questions and just keep giving it your best shot, even if you feel a bit like a fish out of water. You'll find that you'll learn things pretty quickly if you stay dedicated. The Environmental Director even stated during the interview that the Intern position is often more for the Intern than the department. The position really is structured around experiential learning.
