Admissions Ambassador

August 2019 • Fort Lauderdale, FL

What I liked

I loved working with the department of admissions with a team of other ambassadors. My coworkers are so great and my bosses are super understanding and easy to work with. The admissions counselors are very friendly and fun too.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more say in the formation of our schedule

Advice

It’s a very rewarding job but it’s for people who love the university. If you don’t really love NSU, it probably won’t be the best fit. It requires a lot of dedication and you work with students and families who are trying to find the perfect college fit.

Lab Assistant

January - August 2020 • Davie, FL

What I liked

I loved working with Dr. Sikora as his Lab Assistant because I not only got to help students in our class succeed in the topics being taught, but I also got to conduct a research project on the side. I, personally, am not familiar with Education research as most of the research I have conducted has been anatomy and histology based. Dr. Sikora took the time to slowly explain the material to me and taught me tricks and tips on "how to teach" so that I could be the best aid possible for my peers. I truly felt supported and motivated by being in a team that truly wanted all members to succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been in person. While conducting online classes and research is a wonderful experience, I feel that it may have been more practical if I was able to come in person to help teach lessons and learn about different topics. But with the given COVID-19 pandemic, I think the opportunity was the best that it could be !

Advice

One piece of advice would be, "Do not be afraid to ask questions!" I was mortified to ask questions or to look dumb in front of my team, so I tried to research everything by myself. However, this proved to be a very bad use of time and had I not been so afraid initially, I feel like the project could have been completed a lot faster. I think it is definitely a change to not be able to find a single answer all of the time via Google, but remember, your professor is there to guide you and teach you, so take advantage of the opportunity to pick their brain!

Writer, Editor and Social Media Manager

May - August 2020 • Davie, FL

What I liked

I liked being able to come up with topics and articles to write for the summer edition of the school newspaper, which was a first for the university and newspaper. I also liked being able to get creative with graphic designs and posts for the newspaper’s social media.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had a bit more creative freedom to make the summer edition more engaging and interactive for readers. I also wish I would have had a team behind me as I was the only writer writing 5-6 articles a week for the summer.

Advice

This experience provided me an opportunity to test my ability to be creative with topics that our readers would be interested on my own. I enjoyed this because it taught me how to manage an entire newspaper and I realized I could easily do this for my own blog, magazine or paper.

Nova Southeastern's Sea Turtle Conservation Program

June 2019 • Dania Beach, FL

What I liked

I loved the hands-on experience working with baby sea turtles, and the research experience gathering field work for a research project. It was a great opportunity to push yourself while helping sea turtle populations. I loved the feeling knowing that ultimately my work is good for the world, and that it was a once in a lifetime experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that the sun was not so hot because working on the beach in the middle of summer was very difficult, especially when it was 90 degrees by 9am.

Advice

Sea turtle research is a beneficial opportunity that gives you great skills and experiences, but working on the beach is very physically demanding and should not be underestimated.

Summer Housing Assistant

May - August 2018 • Davie, FL

What I liked

-Loved my co-workers. They made the job fun -The pro staff was cool. High energy people -Gained experience in the work field. This was my first real job

What I wish was different

I wish the pay wasnt a stipend. I mean, yes they gave us free housing.. But our work load/commitment requirements were worth more than $1500 a summer.

Advice

-If your not willing to work, don't join. Yes it can be a lot of work at times, but if you collaborate well with everyone and keep a positive mindset, you'll be able to get the work loads done in a timely mannar and you'll do fine with this job.

program coordinator

July 2017 • Fort Lauderdale, FL

What I liked

The faculty whom I work with is respectful. Everyone is cognizant of my above average work ethic and is not afraid to show this.

What I wish was different

I wish the position would have more responsibilities within the department. You are able to utilize the application "Ariba" to perform an array of tasks that call for a knowledge of the programs accounts. Unfortunately, you have no authority over the management of these accounts. The integration of account management into the positions responsibilities would increase the efficiency of this position.

Advice

It has been a great experience, but this is a position for someone seeking little responsibility and pay that matches so .
