Working one-on-one with a CJ professor on their research allowed me to expand my research methods, enter into the world of criminology, and have a personal relationship with a mentor that was able to work with me on projects other than this research to extend my education.
What I wish was different
Nothing! This apprenticeship was one of the best experiences I've had.
Advice
Even if there are no advertisements, reach out to any professor to see if they have any opportunity for you to work on their research. Even if it's not paid, you will learn so much and make connections in the field.
