Financial Representative Intern
February 2020 • Oswego, NY
What I liked
Work schedule is flexible and you get to determine your own success; you get out of this what you put in. The company culture of Northwestern Mutual is unmatched, and the work that you do for your clients is truly meaningful and impactful. This is also a great opportunity to earn licenses that the company will pay for and to learn as much as possible about the importance of insurance and the industry overall.
What I wish was different
A variable salary is something that is very tough to get used to, and there's no roadmap to success in this field.
Advice
Stay motivated through the highs and lows and take the time to interact with different people in this company because there is a lot to be learned.

June - August 2020 • Colorado Springs, CO
What I liked
I liked the people in the company. They all really wanted to help us excel.
What I wish was different
I do not like that this position felt a bit like a pyramid scheme.
Also, they are a bit dishonest in their marketing. They market this as a finance role when in reality it is a sales role.
I also do not like that I was pushed to turn my entire personal network into business connections.
Advice
Only take on this role if you are looking for a sales role.

What I liked
interacting with clients
What I wish was different
That the internship would be more focused on how to do financial planning instead of just how to sell insurance.
Advice
They will ask you to call your friends and family to sell them life insurance. You will cold call. You do not make any money besides $100/week unless you actually sell a life insurance policy. You must have an actual desire to work in finance to be remotely successful during this internship.

There's a lot of freedom with Northwestern Mutual internships. If you don't work hard you won't get much out of it, but if you do then it can be extremely useful.
