Northwestern Mutual

Financial Representative

January - June 2023 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The culture was always the best part of the internship, you work hard while you're working but you can also have fun with some like-minded people. The mentors also make the internship so exciting, they really want you to succeed but they are upfront with you. Put in your time and work and you will get back what you put in.

What I wish was different

I don't think anything should be different, I believe the internship gives you everything you need to succeed and excel but if you don't put in your time, you won't get anything back.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is make initiative. Put yourself forward and learn as much as possible.

Financial Advisor Intern

June - August 2022 • Poughkeepsie, NY

What I liked

For me it was all about the culture of the office. Everyone seemed to be so encouraging and positive that it made you want to come in and work. Never have i every felt like i didn’t belong on the team and not once did they make me feel like im not as important as them in terms of the gap between an intern and working full time.

Advice

My advice to those reading this is to try something new. Although i loved my team im not sure if i would do a sales role again. Internships are a way to explore different areas within your field. I’ve had the pleasure to work for an amazing team, even if sales is not something i would pursue again.

Financial Representative

March 2022 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

The environment was great, everyone was incredibly friendly and willing to help out. There were several outside of work events and it felt everyone actually wanted to know the interns. The knowledge and skills I learned will be valuable the rest of my life.

What I wish was different

The pay is structured similar to a full-time advisor, so I understand why they do it, but the stipend and commission pay structure isn't my personal favorite. However, many people could like that considering there is unlimited potential.

Advice

Know what you are getting into, you are going to have to reach out to people and set and hold meetings with them. This is not a job where a boss is going to be breathing down your neck, you are essentially starting a business. You get out what you put in.
