I enjoyed the independence of the internship. You run your own financial planning practice, so there's a lot of agency and freedom. There's also an incredible emphasis on the professional development of the interns.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

College Financial Representative

May 2021 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I liked the financial planning experience, the people dedicated to my growth and development, and the commission based pay.

What I wish was different

I wish I pursued this internship when I was a senior instead of a junior in college. It is an internship that allows you to fully experience what a career in financial advising is like.

Advice

You will succeed in this experience if you enjoy a client-facing position and personal finance.

Financial Advisor

May 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the professional atmosphere and the help from my mentours; I felt like I was treated and expected to perform just as well as a full time advisor.

What I wish was different

It was difficult to actively manage a calendar and decide what my schedule looked like but in the end I found it most important :)

Advice

Advocate for yourself and reach out if you are struggling; you will get the help you need and more!

College Financial Representative

April - August 2021 • Austin, TX

What I liked

It was a great atmosphere, everyone at the Westlake location was extremely nice and helpful. I also learned skills in a professional setting that will carry over to any career choice. It was a very hands on experience, unlike any job I'd ever had.

What I wish was different

I wish that they gave you a foot in the door in terms of a clientele base, as you have to build one from the ground up. Because it's all on you to build your network you're often left to call upon friends and family to help grow your business, something that I really didn't enjoy doing.

Advice

I'd say that it's worth it only if you want to get into financial advising as a career, or if you want to eventually get into sales. The experience you get from this internship is pretty valuable, but only if you want to end up in those particular fields mentioned earlier.

Finance Intern

January - June 2021 • Leawood, KS

What I liked

I liked the other interns, and the hands on experience of having an internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I wasn't a sales person. It was all sales, and very little actual planning on behalf of the customer's behalf.

Advice

I would like to share that it is not for everyone. It is way more sales than they lead to believe in the interview process.

College Financial Representative

June 2020 • Clinton, NJ

What I liked

The level of training before beginning actual work is phenomenal. The work schedule is extremely flexible, and the work itself is rewarding. I have learned a variety of different skills that would translate easily to any other role, if I wanted one! I have personally found a home at Northwestern, and will continue as a College Rep until graduation, then convert to a full-time position. I highly recommend giving the internship a shot, no matter what major you are.

What I wish was different

Advice

This internship is unique. It involves a great deal of facing clients, and learning how to communicate information effectively. If you are a 'people person,' you will have so much fun and learn a great deal! Also, because Northwestern is in financial planning and wealth management, you will learn a lot about how to manage your own finances. There is nothing like finding a little bit of financial peace; and in this internship, you get to help others find that peace too!

What I liked

The people at the downtown Colorado Springs office of Northwestern Mutual are amazing. They were super fun to work with and it was a great experience. I learned a lot and they paid for my licenses.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave us a little more guidance on what to do when you run out of clients.

Advice

Always, always, always ask your clients who else you can reach out to. Otherwise, you will quickly run out of people to contact.

Financial advisor

May - September 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

They don’t make you do stereotypical intern tasks. We were given full training and put directly in the field. There’s potential in this internship to do just as well if not better than a full time financial advisor. They have you doing the same exact job you’d be doing if they hired you full time.

What I wish was different

It was pretty much sales-based. You’re soliciting from your family and friends. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I fall into the group of people who isn’t the most comfortable doing things like that. If you don’t mind it, then by all means go for it.

Advice

You might as well give something a chance to know whether you really want to pursue it as a career or not. Sometimes that means going out of your comfort zone.
