Northern Trust

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed working on new projects in Excel that would help streamline and make the jobs of my co-workers easier. The opportunity to work on these special projects allowed me to expand my horizons and make an immediate impact. It was also great getting out of my comfort zone presenting investment committee materials during credit committee. They really take you under their wing and give you immediate exposure to the industry.

What I wish was different

Asked more questions from my peers and gotten more of their feedback sooner.

Advice

The credit underwriting process can be complex and deep. As an intern you don't have to know everything. Be willing to seek for advice after you have done all you can in striving to solve the task at hand and your co-workers will really appreciate it.

What I liked

The culture was great. My team leader and coworkers were always so welcoming and eager to answer any questions I had. There were a lot of ways to get involved in different areas. They also often offered classes to improve your skills in areas such as excel or emotional intelligence in the workplace.

Wealth Management Intern

June - August 2017 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I was able to work with a team of extremely accomplished bankers, portfolio managers, and trust officers in order to learn more about wealth management for wealthy individuals. The program had structured information sessions to learn more about all the opportunities the company offers and I was able to work on projects with others as well as with a team. Also, interns are interviewed first for full-time positions and this process starts towards the end of the summer, I already have a job when I graduate which is awesome!

What I wish was different

I was the only intern, it would have been nice to have someone else my age in the office with me but it also allowed for me to get a lot of personalized attention. Also, the Miami office is not the headquarters so if given the option to choose I would've liked to be in Chicago instead since it is super nice and I am from there.

Advice

Make an effort to sit down and meet with members of different teams around the office and ask about their career path. It was extremely helpful to learn about all the backgrounds people had that lead them to their position now. Also, ask for extra work or projects you can help on and let your manager know what your interests are in order to have your projects align with what you like.

Client Reporting and Performance

June - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The company culture is ethical and accommodating. Northern Trust tries to honor a 9-5 schedule, yet it manages to achieve efficiency nonetheless.

What I wish was different

I wish that my internship expectations were better set by my manager at the beginning of the internship.

Advice

At the end of the internship, each intern was rated on their performance. I prepared for this by creating a checklist of tasks to complete to achieve the highest rating. However, at the end of the internship, I fell one rating short. I realized that top performers differentiate themselves with a proactive attitude, not just a checklist. Be sure that you're always helpful and looking for ways to further assist.
