What I liked

I liked that I got to do a lots of hands-on work in a research lab and get paid for it!

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advise anyone who's interested in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) to apply to as many as they can manage, because they are competitive.

Mentor

May - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed how I was able to mentor high school students and prepare them for college, as well as expose them to STEM. I specifically focused on underwater robotics.

What I wish was different

Not anyone's fault, but a class like robotics is much easier and more engaging in person than it is virtually.

Advice

To be genuine and push yourself to be the best so these students can look up to you

Reseach Assistant

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to experience life in the city of Massachusetts. I also got to see how life was like for a graduate Ph.D. student in Chemistry. Also, I conducted intense research in synthetic organic chemistry.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been more prepared to live in my own apartment and gain more house responsibility skills. It was my first time being by myself and I had to perform many trials and errors to learn to cook, buy groceries and clean.

Advice

I think everyone should take up the opportunity to participate in internships away from home. I was able to meet many new people in a new environment and experience a new way of living and establish new networking opportunities. Talking with people from other areas helped me develop new ways to look at things and discover new hobbies and areas in my field that I would have never known.
