Soil Research

What I liked
I liked having the independence to work on my own and have hands-on, professional experience.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have chosen my research project for the internship.
Advice
Do not be afraid of failure. I applied to eight internships including some I knew were super competitive and even though I did not get accepted to them all, I was able to network through interviews.

Lab Researcher
May - July 2018 • Raleigh, NC
What I liked
The project was a relatively new area of research. The project involved a great deal of independent experimental design with a great deal of hands-on laboratory experience.
What I wish was different
The program could have been longer and a little bit more organized. Also, it could have been less restrictive on interpreting services.
Advice
Some mentors assume you have past laboratory experience and are less hands-on; the same goes for the other graduate students. Just be well-prepared and ready to learn. Read and study the research topic beforehand.

Kelman Scholar
May 2018 • Raleigh, NC
What I liked
I enjoyed having my own research project that was molecular focused. Although, my mentor guided me, she did it in a more hands-off way. It was great learning experience for me to rely on my own efforts, do extra research to solve problems, and not being afraid to ask labmates for advice.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more opportunities/activities to meet other Kelman scholars. I only knew my roommates and one Kelman not rooming with me because she was my labmate.
Advice
Take the opportunity to meet with other faculty members.

Undergraduate Computer Science Researcher
May - August 2018 • Raleigh, NC
What I liked
I enjoyed the independence I had and the other undergraduate and graduate students were extremely helpful.
What I wish was different
I wish I had developed skills that would be applicable outside of the very specific research project (we were designing a study for an intro to Matlab course)
Advice
If you get into research, makes sure you are working on a project that you are partial too. Working on a project that you don't care very much about won't be very enjoyable.

The experience of networking and gaining knowledge in the fields of genomics and gene sequencing. Also, figuring out that bench research is not what I want to pursue.

I wish there had been more diversity in the cohort.

It's a great way to learn about a field that is quickly growing. It is also great exposure to bench research..

Research Fellow
May - August 2017 • Raleigh, NC
What I liked
It was a tremendous opportunity to participate in research activities in another lab. It was a great experience to live in another state for the summer. The people I met where absolutely amazing, and they truly pushed, and continue to push, me to be the best version of myself.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have done more than one summer internship.
Advice
Engage yourself in every opportunity you have. Meet as many people as possible from as many departments and levels of experience as possible. You will not regret connecting to people and learning about their experiences.
