Nordstrom

Retail Sales Intern

June - August 2018 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a retail setting and getting to supervise the many elements that go into managing a department in a major retail store.

What I wish was different

I think there should have been more corporate training!

Advice

Everything is temporary & always ask what you can do to achieve your next role.

Logistics

December 2016 • Beachwood, OH

What I liked

Nordstrom has a reputation of creating a family environment for their employees and customers. The environment was the best part. Everyone was willing to help out the logistics team during holidays.

What I wish was different

The hours were hard to get through. Logistics is a fast paced job and one would have to travel around the whole Nordstrom store to complete the job. The Nordstrom store is three stories so imagine doing an 8 hour job, running around a department store. It was exhausting.

Advice

Get to know everyone in every department and help out. Employees appreciate when other teams help them get through their shift. Team work is not limited to logistics, it goes to the sales floor.

Retail Salesperson

May - August 2018 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed this job even if it was for a short while. I loved that this job gave me the opportunity to branch out and learn even greater communication and customer service skills. This opportunity also have me the ability to see a glimpse into the fashion world. I was able to see what I was capable and I loved it because I did things that I never thought I could accomplish in such a short time. Overall, best experience and glad that I seized the moment.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I cannot say that I would have done anything different. I truly appreciated the opportunity and can truly say that I enjoyed and was excited to go to work every day.

Advice

I would say do not be afraid to put yourself out there and take more chances and risks. I definitely went out of my box and comfort zone with this job but that is what benefited me in the end. I wasn't scared to talk to people, sell myself, sell the product, and in the end better the company as a whole. I would encourage anyone going into any field to take risks because you never know when that moment will pass you by.

Warehouse associate

June - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

Laid back. Already set procedures. Open for suggestion. Guaranteed hours.

What I wish was different

Less repetitive movements but that comes with the work

Advice

Show up on time and work till you sweat because they will like you and ask for your return. If you are going to school and are looking for more of the business side, you’ve already stepped foot in a company and left a good reputation, so if you were to apply for a different position you’d have people in the company to back you up

Corporate Finance Intern

June - August 2017 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The best thing about Nordstrom was getting to mix my passion for fashion with my love for the study of finance and numbers. Nordstrom has a very hands on internship program that gives you insight on all aspects of the company while fostering a company culture that is conducive to personal and professional growth.

What I wish was different

Nordstrom has an extremely well thought out internship. They provided us with free housing, mentors, internal and external immersion days, and even sponsored a family weekend, so the only thing I wish I did differently was get involved with Nordstrom earlier!

Advice

Start with companies you already know and love. The more passionate you are about the company and role you will take on, the more comfortable you will be identifying what strengths make you an asset for the team and overall company.

Retail Management Intern

June - August 2016 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I liked learning about the selling techniques and customer service. And the employee discount was a nice perk.

What I wish was different

This internship was 85% retail (working on the sales floor) and 15% management; for me, it was too much selling and working as a sales person than actual "retail management".

Advice

Make sure to get outside of your comfort zone and be able to sell.

Fullfillment Associate

June - August 2018 • Des Peres, MO

What I liked

The job was very quick paced. There was always something to do and my team served as support for the entire store which was super rewarding! My passion for fashion also grew so much while working for Nordstrom.

What I wish was different

The shifts got to be very long during anniversary sale: 10 hours sometimes.

Advice

The only piece of advice I can give is for the interview- speak about fashion as a passion and talk a bit about Nordstrom as a whole. Know their mission and what's up and coming within the company because they're always changing to stay customer-obsessed.

Seasonal Sales Associate

June - August 2018 • Beachwood, OH

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibility that allowed me to grow on my own, but I also received a large amount of support from my coworkers and managers towards reaching my goals! Nordstrom taught me a lot about the tremendous amount of work and effort it takes to deliver optimal customer experiences.

What I wish was different

I would not have changed too much about the experience. If anything, I would have enjoyed seeing more coaching and education about job opportunities moving forward from the sales associate level!

Advice

Keep your big picture in mind and study how your experience will give your relevant learnings for your future! Retail sales is an amazing and complicated world that can provide anyone with a lot of challenges and knowledge to take with you.

Retail Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I gained managerial experience and advanced leadership skills through performing duties such as re-merchandising sales floor plans according to business needs, planning inventory transfers, and reviewing sales trends and opportunities. I also generated business plans alongside other interns in order to create new techniques to implement more technology into Nordstrom brick and mortar stores.

What I wish was different

More variation in seeing all aspects of the business, like visiting different departments of the store and meeting up with the other interns more consistently.

Advice

The internship is very sales oriented and the depth of the managerial experiences depends on the stores managers commitment.
