Sales Associate

June - August 2019 • Farmington, CT

What I liked

It was commission based pay, which worked really well for me because I’m a hard worker and very good at sales. It was the most professional environment I’ve ever worked in. The competition was entertaining too. I was one of the top sellers in the department.

What I wish was different

I wish I’d gotten to work there during the school year. I had an offer from the local Nordstrom, and they said I didn’t even have to be interviewed, but I would’ve had to work full time, which is too much for me.

Advice

Only work at a commission based job if you’re confident in your sales ability and social skills! I had a friend who really struggled with the job because he wasn’t as good at the sales portion as I was. The personalities of the top sellers stood out much more clearly than the lower sellers.

Apparel Salesperson

June - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I loved the environment created by the people involved. The atmosphere was friendly, inviting, hard-working, and there was a lot of neat apparel!

What I wish was different

The job was more or less enjoyable; management was always either strict or laid back so finding the rhythm when things start picking up was probably the most difficult part.

Advice

Be on time, pay attention during training, and have fun.

Nordstrom Sales Stylist

June - August 2019 • Lynnwood, WA

What I liked

I loved working with customers to show them new styles that were on-trend and what new pieces they could add to their existing wardrobe to make old pieces look new again

What I wish was different

I wish the management would have been more structured, however, this was a temporary issue that has now been resolved.

Advice

I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the store, what brands are where and what is popular in each age group. This allows you to serve more clients effectively rather than you running around the store trying to find something or to find a brand.

Retail Management intern

June - July 2019 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

They were a very strong company with valued engraved so deeply you couldn’t help but enjoy it. We got to sell merchandise, shadow every job in the building and work Anniversary sale which is their biggest event of the year. They took extremely good care of their interns and made sure we had one of the best summers ever.

I wish I would’ve been more confident in my selling and taken more initiative on cross selling.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and an itch to learn. Things move very quickly and it just takes a positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Logistics Processor

June 2019 • Tigard, OR

What I liked

The management at Nordstrom was amazing. The job was fairly easy, yet so entertaining. Looking at all the new inflow of product everyday was great (not so much for my bank account). I loved their flexibility with breaks and lunches, if it had been a long busy day at work, management would offer incentives and extra breaks to those who needed it.

What I wish was different

The one thing I did not enjoy about Nordstrom was the attitudes from other co-workers in the sales departments to those working in stock/fulfillment. They would often look down on you and push you to the side for no reason at all. Management took awhile to fix this issue, but on the upside it eventually got better.

Advice

My advice to anyone wanting to work at Nordstrom is to apply to any department! They are so flexible within their departments and always want to see you succeed, whether that being moving up the ladder or simply going to a different department to try something new out.

Sales Associate

June - September 2019 • Austin, TX

What I liked

Overall I loved the experience I was gaining because I was able to work with great people who welcomed questions about how the business itself works and not just trying to sell products.

What I wish was different

My schedule was not very consistent through the summer and as someone who enjoys routine I would like to have a consistent schedule next summer whether it is at Nordstrom or in a business application internship.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, Nordstrom is bar far the best place I've ever worked, so my advice would be to of course work hard but also enjoy the process.

Service Experience Representative

May - August 2019 • Scottsdale, AZ

What I liked

The team I worked with and the atmosphere was very welcoming. Also, I was always given a challenge to further my understanding of our POS system.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be yourself in the interview process as Nordstrom’s looks for individuality. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions throughout the process as they also love people who are devoted to becoming a team member at their store.

Retail Management Intern

May - August 2016 • Coral Gables, FL

What I liked

Being able to participate in manager meetings on a weekly basis to know what is store up to in the next upcoming weeks. The training on how to sell - very useful for any career path.

What I wish was different

85% of this internship is you selling on the sales floor/department store. Its really challenging especially because you are paid on commission. I wish there was less selling and more "retail management" like they said the internship was going to be.

Advice

Be confident and sell, sell, sell.
