Assistant Chief Lifeguard

June - August 2019 • Redwood, NY

What I liked

The scenery in the location makes slower days go by much faster and my fellow employees were very pleasant to work with.

What I wish was different

The facility is quite quiet on longer rainy days. I wish we could have been allowed to read or listen to reasonably quiet music while waiting for the weather to clear up.

Advice

This state lifeguarding job pays quite well as a summer job and I would advise people who are interested to contact a state park location closest to you to see if there is any available positions.

Parks and Recreational Assistant

May - October 2019 • Rome, NY

What I liked

One of the things that I loved about working at Delta Lake State Park was the interaction(s) that I had with patrons. I thoroughly enjoyed working in an environment where customer satisfaction was so important, and I valued myself on my excellent customer service. I also enjoyed working for Delta Lake State Park because it allowed me to learn more about other NYS Parks that I was not familiar with before accepting this position.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had spent my days off doing more productive things. Most of the time, I would just sit around the house on my days off. Next summer, I plan on getting out of the house more on my days off and going on adventures.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share is being 100% committed to a job before going into it. Whether you are applying for an internship, summer job, or a full-time position, commitment is key to your success in that job. Working a summer job means giving up (most) of your summer vacation. You can expect to work between 30-40 hours a week if it is full time, which takes a chunk out of your free time. Make sure you are 100% willing/able to commit to such hours.
