What I liked
It is a great way to get Medical experience and to expose yourself to working at a hospital. All of the nurses were nice, and you learn a lot about Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) at the hospital. You also learn a lot about how the hospital works, such as its "bullet system" and get to interact with patients on a weekly basis.

Occupational Therapy Volunteer

What I liked
During my summer break after my first year of college I spent 20 hours a week going to New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell's Out-patient OT floor. Here I was able to experience so so much more about Occupational Therapy. On the OT floor there were different rooms, hands therapy, neuro room, and the pediatrics room. During my 9am to 5 pm shift I would go around from each room checking up on them to see if the OT's need any help. If none of the therapists needed any sort of help then I was able to observe. I got to see patients that have suffered a stroke and how they are receiving treatment. I was a hands on assistant to one of the therapist that was treating a patient with vertigo. I helped one of the OT's do research for patients with vestibular migraine and another therapist with global health in relation to OT. I operated the BTE machine for the patient when the therapist had other patients that need to be worked with. I greeted and sat the patients from the waiting room to the hands therapy room, and from there I would then assemble a heat pad for their treatment area. I would encourage the children that would receive treatments in the pediatric room while making the session a little more interactive with them. I assisted the therapist in making custom moldable splints, while learning the difference between Polyform and Ezeform. I got to assist the patient in guiding their hand into the paraffin bath as well as wrapping them up. I learned about the uses of ultrasound on a burn patient. I was able to observe manual lymphedema drainage as well as wrapping. Immersing myself in all of these actives with the therapists really helped me experience the way the daily routine of an occupational therapist goes, as well as learn more about occupational therapy. I would truly look forward to going into the hospital every day and experience everything I did. I am beyond grateful of the experience that this volunteer opportunity has given me to be the best future occupational therapist I can be.

The volunteer office at the hospital was a little disorganized so I wish I started sooner.
Advice
If you have the time do it. This was an amazing experience and I wish every OT student can experience it.

What I liked
The staff at the EKG Lab were super nice. They were very open to me asking questions and really wanted this to be a valuable summer experience. I was placed here with the program SYEP and everyone was super friendly. Overall experience was great.
What I wish was different
During my patient care shifts, sometimes two volunteers were placed at the same time. Sometimes I would have nothing to do because there were so a couple of us during the same shift.
Advice
Ask the nurses or techs if they need any help with anything. They usually gave us something to do if we asked. Also, ask questions about their work and ask to shadow when they are attending to patients. They are very willing to show you and explain what they are doing.

What I liked
Employers were very friendly, learned a lot about public health in the Chinese community. Offered a low-stress work environment with a focus on team-building. Location was great for trying out different types of food. Learned a lot about the administrative side of public health.
What I wish was different
Nothing, experience was great. Wish it was longer (was only a 6 week program, 25 hrs a week)
Advice
This position is from the SYEP program for students who live in the 5 boroughs of NY. I would advise to sign up before March for this experience as you can find part time positions in many different career paths. To work for NYP-Lower Manhattan CCPH, you must be able to speak Chinese, have strong work ethic, and be friendly as you will be participating in public health events.

Pharmacy intern

What I liked
It is definitely a different experience from community pharmacy! I do medication reconciliation, which is essentially verifying a patient's medication history and noting down any discrepancies. It is so interesting to see how hospital pharmacy operates and I learned so much from talking to patients and other pharmacists.
What I wish was different
I just wish I was exposed to IV compounding more. That is one aspect of hospital pharmacy I am somewhat missing out on since I only had 2-3 weeks of training. But nonetheless, it was great exposure to see how IV bags are prepared for the patients.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions or for help! It is definitely a learning process and enjoy your first few days as a new intern!
