New York Power Authority

Devlopmental Intern

June - August 2022 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

The work environment. The individuals who work in the department full time were so eager to meet and talk to you. They were also eager to help better understand their department and what kind of work they are responsible for. Very welcoming place to work and learn.

What I wish was different

I wish that I took advantage of their group trainings and programs, to network and connect with more interns.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek out help. Connect with people within the department you work in as well as other departments as well. Most people are eager to connect with interns and provide them more information.

Information Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Lewiston, NY

What I liked

Being able to work in a professional environment and learn from professionals was a great experience. Also, the exposure to a very different field of work (engineering) was fascinating. It's great to see how all functions of an organization come together.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken on another project or two. Some of the projects I did were pretty short so I would be done within a week.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and get as much knowledge as you can about the place you are working.

Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Intern

May 2016 • Lewiston, NY

What I liked

The quality of time spent with engineers who were willing to take time out of their day to have conversations with me about construction methods and electromagnetic theory.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all. This was the best experience of my career.

Advice

Find out what drives you in your career, then find someone who is a walking encyclopedia on the topic and ask as many questions as possible.

Project Management Intern

May - August 2018 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

The atmosphere and my co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a chance to work with even more people and get to understand their projects too.

Advice

I would share that time flies by very quickly and that they should keep a log of things they've done so they don't forget since there is a final intern presentation that needs to be done.

Energy Efficiency Intern

May - August 2018 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

I like how the New York Power Authority had an organized 12 week internship program with fields trips, many opportunities to network as well as a presentation. My department gave me plenty of work to do and I learned something new every week.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more instructions on what is appropriate to wear when I was on-site for a project.

Advice

I would apply to multiple internship positions because most of the departments are valuable in gaining experience.
