Marketing and Business Development

June 2019 - August 2019 Menlo Park, CA
“ When starting the Business Development and Marketing Communications internship at NEA, I expected to learn a ton about Venture Capital. I was excited to learn about VC because my knowledge of the field was limited to what I learned in class and nothing from personal life experience. I was nervous to be thrown into NEA with the giants of the business world, but was pleasantly surprised with how easy the transition was. I worked with closely with Shanna Hendriks and Ashley Mitchell and the rest of the Business Development and Enterprise Teams. I originally expected I would be sitting at my computer logging numbers in spreadsheets and not getting much exposure to the industry, but that expectation was shattered on the first day in Menlo Park. Ashley and Shanna walked me around the office and introduced me to everyone present that Monday. I was taken aback by how excited and willing everyone was to get to know me. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to sit in on an internal firm wide meeting, let alone be exposed to the complexities of the decision making process that the Investing Team and General Partners go through in order to make powerful investments. I was astonished by how much exposure I received over the course of the internship and as I’m currently starting my last year at Santa Clara University, am beginning to realize how much I’ve learned from the summer spent at NEA. While attending the all-hands meetings, the partners encouraged me to sit at the main table with the big players and get a taste of what it’s like to be in the action. I started off being an intimidated intern and was quickly immersed into the NEA family. While sitting alongside so many successful experienced individuals, I felt as though I was genuinely part of the team. The NEA staff listened to any constructive ideas being thrown around the meeting rooms because they are focused on incorporating diverse perspectives. After just a few short days, being greeted by smiles and handshakes became the norm. Feeling valued right off the bat was something that profoundly exceeded my expectations. In addition to feeling a part of the team, the work my bosses had me doing actually made an impact on the firms performance, as I helped with projects that connected portfolio companies to NEA and much more. The work was hard but Shanna and Ashley stuck their necks out for me and made sure I was on the right track. They helped me ask researched and educated questions so I wouldn’t waste anyone's valuable time. This simple act has transferred over to my life because I have a much better understanding of how to be an effective and efficient employee while still being able to learn how to work cohesively in a business environment. The projects I worked on were constantly evolving into bigger and better accomplishments as we worked between calls and meetings that were filled with laughter and constructive criticism. One of the many aspects of the NEA that set them apart from my prior employers was that they were willing to be a part of, and have a direct impact on my future career. Shanna and Ashley both made it clear that as long as I was willing to put in the work and do my part they would help me jump start my career with tips on resume building, effective business communication and workplace etiquette. Other places haven’t gone the extra mile like that for me. I never thought working at NEA was going to be such an engaging and personally advancing experience but I know now that they have set me up on the path to success. ”
