Teacher

June 2020 • Red Hook, NY

What I liked

I love interacting with my students and teaching them about Spanish language and culture. Not only is it a great opportunity to share my passion and knowledge of other cultures with young people, it’s also amazing experience for me as a Spanish education major! I love the freedom to make my own lesson plans and run the classes in the way I feel is best for that specific set of students and type of material. I also love watching my students grow and learn throughout our class time together!

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different would be the amount of classes I was teaching. I wish I had taken on more classes so I could work with more students.

Advice

My advice is the plan ahead! Before the class even begins, have an idea of what every class will be like. I make a syllabus and leave the last few classes open to cover the interests of the students. Often, that’s outer space or animals or dinosaurs, something like that. But planning is the key to making sure your lessons and materials make an impact on the students in the most effective way possible.

Spanish Tutor

November 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

The pay is great It is easy to find new students and new opportunities Varsity Tutor's online resources are very helpful for learning how to be a better educator with specific helps tips for online/remote instruction.

What I wish was different

I wish I could do more in-person tutoring but there are few clients in Rexburg.

Advice

Write thorough lesson-plans with a lot of leeway for students that learn slower or faster. Re-use lessons for multiple students.

Tutor

June 2019 • Colts Neck Township, NJ

What I liked

It is very easy to get clients and they do a good job at answering any questions you may have. It is also relatively easy to get certified to tutor various subjects (I did not have to do any additional studying for any of their tests). Additionally, they let you do your own thing - there is a lot of freedom as the tutor to approach things as you want.

What I wish was different

The pay is decent for a summer job ($15/hr online, $25/hr in-person), but there is no room for increased salary in the contract that you sign with them which can be a down-side. They also give you a relatively small percentage of what they receive from the clients for their tutoring packages. The downside to the amount of freedom that you have as a tutor is that you must supply your own materials for the most part (they do provide practice problems but that is about it).

Advice

While you might get better pay working with a different tutoring company, Varsity Tutors lets you pick when you work and there is certainly no shortage of opportunties to tutor - something which other companies may struggle to provide you with.

Tutor

July 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I love working for varsity tutors because you get to make your own schedule. it is something that can be done in person or online so I usually take in person clients in seattle, where I live where I can drive to their house or the library they want to meet up at but during the school year I continue on with the clients online or can get other clients online. It has extremely flexible hours and the clients are fun to work with!

What I wish was different

I wish I received more training because they pretty much don't give you any materials to work with you have to find them on your own. for some clients this is difficult and for some it isn't at all. the internet is a great resource!

Advice

Be super organized! with hour or two hour sessions one or twice a week and having a full plate of clients you can get mixed up super easily. have a planner or a place where you write down your schedule for every week!

Tutor

February 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I enjoy the flexibility to choose my own schedule and students.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was better communication between corporate and tutors. Sometimes, clients would call Varsity and expect the message to be relayed to me and that did not occur. The same is true on my end.

Advice

Be outgoing. Ask questions. Clients love tutors who take an interest in their students' lives.

Tutor

March 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I find that helping others with school subjects reinforces my own understanding of the subject. I also like the teaching aspect of tutoring. The best part are the flexible hours during the school year.

What I wish was different

I wish it was easier to obtain online opportunities, as they would work better with my schedule during the school year, to cut down on travel time.

Advice

I would recommend this experience to any full-time college student looking for a part-time job while in school. But this is an experience for people who have reliable means of travel, and/or who are very comfortable using public transportation.
