NAVSEA

Intern

June - August 2021 • Bethesda, MD

What I liked

I enjoyed the unique opportunities for conducting research and partaking in various projects.

What I wish was different

My internship was online due to Covid-19 but I wish it were in-person.

Advice

Knowing the basics of computer programming would help a lot in this internship but if you don't, its okay. If you enjoy conducting research and proposing new ideas that could possible be used by the Navy in the future, this internship is the right place for you.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June 2018 - September 2019 • Newport, RI

What I liked

Very interesting work.

What I wish was different

The internship program is very large at NUWC Newport, interns and employees for a variety of different companies and from the government all work in one campus so it is easy to get lost in the sauce. I wish they had more resources to prevent this.

Advice

With NUWC Newport your internship experience is as much or little as you make it, so take the initiative and make it a worthwhile experience.

What I liked

I like how welcoming everyone was. Training was easy to follow and didn’t feel intimidating.

What I wish was different

I wish the hiring process could have been different. Each stage took a little long during the process leading to my start date being pushed back.

Advice

Some advice I would give is to stay open minded. The work I did at this internship isn’t exactly in my major; however, I have been able to learn a lot of new things that I can apply to whatever future job I obtain.

Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Corona, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to improve my coding ability. I am an Electrical and Computer Engineer and sometimes we do not get to do very much coding in our classes but it is something I enjoy. I was able to learn Python, which I did not have previous experience with before, and produce a program that aided in sorting data for the NAVSEA analysts. This was most definitely a useful skill that I could use later on and it was a fun challenge to learn a new programming language.

What I wish was different

A lot of the tasks were more research driven, but I would have liked some more hands on tasks. Learning Python and utilizing was a fun task and a useful skill to now have and it would have been great to have a few more tasks like that. The research was helpful and mainly focused on artificial intelligence, which is a very relative topic, but it was a lot to go and research for 8 hours each day.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to make sure you go around and talk to the employees there, especially those who have had a long career there. Many of them had very interesting stories and they were very knowledgeable about how the company works and what exactly their purpose is there. Some of them were also very knowledgeable about newer topics and how those topics, such as artificial intelligence, could be effectively utilized to improve the everyday tasks that they currently have.
