I really loved the group I worked for this summer, and the research I was able to do -- even in a telework environment. My coworkers found ways that I could help and be useful in a permanent, meaningful way.
What I wish was different
I wish that I could have worked there in person (pandemic did not allow for this), as I would have worked for them in a slightly different capacity that was more aligned with my major. However, I was still extremely satisfied.
Advice
Even if you are not able to work at your job in-person, the experience you have teleworking will also be very valuable and worthwhile. Use this as an opportunity to get to know as many people as possible!

Student Trainee
June 2019 • Dahlgren, VA
What I liked
Working with great people, gaining experience in an important system for the fleet, helping with testing for the new systems, and certifying the equipment works properly on-board the ship.
What I wish was different
I wish I had some more formal training with the system, as well as had a better insight on the procedures for inspecting and verifying the systems on the ship.
Advice
If I were to give some advice, it would be to be persistent in gaining as much experience in the system you are supporting as possible. The better you know the system, the more knowledge you will have to provide support for it. Get to know the people around you, and learn from them as much as you can. Chances are, they will have many years of experience in that system, whether it be from their employment, or their experience in the military.
