NAU Mathematics and Statistics

Math coach

November 2016 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

This program is completely online. All meetings with your team and students are through a video conference tool. Also you get to create your own hours. So you could have an internship or other job and still fulfill all duties as a math coach.

What I wish was different

More training on technological programs used.

Advice

Even if you do not think that you are good at math, this job can still be a good option for you for two reasons: 1. There is a training class in the spring where we train you on the math material you will need to tutor and 2. The majority of your job is spent helping your students transition to college and giving them tips for coming to NAU.

What I liked

I loved working with my peers, especially since I am going into education as my career. I gained a lot of valuable experience, and I plan to continue working with Peak Performance in the coming summers!

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten more hours over the course of the summer, as it is difficult to afford Flagstaff's cost of living while making less than the city's minimum wage.

Advice

I would advise anyone who has a passion for teaching and helping others to apply for this job, as it really improves social and teaching skills!

Math Coach

May - August 2019 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I liked being able to tutor students and help them to increase their math skills and deepen their understanding. I feel like I helped them be more prepared for college.

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have been better trained on the technology prior to starting the program, because I had a lot of technical difficulties that could have been sorted out had we had more training beforehand. Additionally, I wish that the students were required to book an appointment at least 24 hours beforehand, because it would make it easier for me to plan my day, rather than have a student schedule an appointment 30 minutes before the appointment and then throw my plans off.

Advice

Start learning about the technology on your own so that you are competent before the summer begins.

Math Coach

February 2019 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

I loved meeting with students over summer and hearing about what they were looking forward to most in college. I saw a younger version of myself in them and it was super fun to provide them with resources and development a close mentor-student relationship. Also, I just really love math!

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't been afraid to ask for help from my supervisor or team lead over summer. It was my first summer job and I faced a few obstacles getting used to my new responsibilities. I think I should've met with returning coaches more frequently during the training process to better prepare myself and get personalized advice on how to be the best coach I can be.

Advice

It's ok if you've never tutored before! It's ok if you're shy, are nervous talking to people, or already have a summer job and are not sure if you can handle this one. It is actually really easy to feel comfortable with your students once you recognize they are probably more nervous about meeting you than the other way around. And your hours are super flexible because YOU choose them, so reach out to us and ask questions if you even have a tiny bit of interest. You will walk away with great time management, public speaking, and organization skills by the time next school year rolls around.
