What I liked

I loved being able to see a different side of the NSLC as I got to see the experience from the perspective of being on staff as opposed to being a student. It was amazing to get to know people from all around the country and the world and just helping them learn hands-on about their passions. The staff was also so welcoming and I loved being a part of the family.

What I wish was different

I just wish that I was there for a longer time, being there was definitely the best part of my summer.

Advice

If you're interested, apply, and be ready to have an unforgettable experience :)

Engineering Program Director

January 2017 - August 2018 • New Haven, CT

What I liked

The environment and the people are absoltely incredible. I have never worked with a more supportive group. I also grew A LOT as a leader, and was able to develop strong communication and planning skills that I am excited to take with me into the work force.

What I wish was different

Nothing, but you do have to know going into the job how long the days are. Working with high school students and alongside other college students is an amazing experience, but for 9 days you will be working 14-18 hour days. Plus you work four of those sessions with a short break in between each session. It’s worth the exhaustion, but make sure you know what you’re signing up for.

Advice

I’ve worked with NSLC for three years, but even one year is enough to be absolutely life changing. Not only do you have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped high schools students grow as leaders and as individuals, but you will also grow exponentially. I have gained more than I ever thought I could from this job (friends, both leadership skills and technical skills that make me employable, etc.). I thought this was just another summer job, but I came back three years in a row because it is so much more than that. If you have even a teeny bit of interest in this kind of role, APPLY!

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work with high school students in an engaged and creative education setting. It was extremely rewarding to see their growth in knowledge, professionalism, and leadership, and in some ways I got the chance to grow my own strengths too.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job could have taken place a little closer to home. The days were long, and I didn't have a chance to talk to my friends and family very often.

Advice

I would like to share that the experience is extremely gratifying, and I would encourage other students to have a similar working experience.

What I liked

Teaching high school students about my career path and getting to share nursing skills with them, while watching their passion for the field grow (or watching them realize they will choose another path).

What I wish was different

The team dynamic - some staff members/other program staff were very exclusive. However, for the most part, staff was a family!

Advice

Be an advisor and a supporter, not a boss.

What I liked

NSLC is an incredible organization run primarily by college-aged students. Every staff member is super dedicated and generally really wants to be there and help change the students' lives. Fair warning, the hours/days can be long. If you were questioning whether you could do a finance job on Wall Street where you're working 15-18hr days, NSLC will help you see if you can do it. But it's an incredible opportunity to work for this organization and you will meet some lifelong friends. I highly recommend working for NSLC and wish I had worked for them every summer of college.
