Podcast Intern

September - December 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It was wonderful getting to meet people I've heard on my favorite podcasts. They gave lots of different learning opportunities like trainings and lunch & learns. There were plenty of opportunities to reach out and meet people who worked in different departments too. NPR had pretty good systems in place for working remotely.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to gain experience with audio editing/engineering. Due to the remote work situation, I was not able to get any experience in this area.

Advice

Make the most of it! Attend optional training sessions, schedule meetings/coffee dates with people you admire even if you aren't interning on their project or in their department.

Service Desk Intern

January - June 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Everyone is so nice and helpful. You do not feel tense or anxious working there because everyone is willing to help you succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish corona did not happen so I could have worked in the building longer. But as for the work experience it was great.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions and learn. The whole purpose of an internship is to gain experience in environments outside the classroom. If you learn by asking questions in the classroom then you will learn from asking questions in a corporate environment.

Journalist Intern

June - September 2019 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

My bosses were super kind and helpful. I had no experience, but they taught me everything and immediately let me begin researching, writing, and recording my own stories.

What I wish was different

There were not many chances for me to interact with people my own age.

Advice

Don't be afraid to cold-email a place you've always wanted to work! Just spend time to make sure you're sending it to the right person, and don't be afraid to send a follow-up and include a cover letter/resume right in it!

Events Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved getting to know the other interns and having interesting and important responsibilities. I also liked getting to travel for live events and attending Tiny Desk Concerts!

What I wish was different

Sometimes there is a bit of a divide between the Newsroom staff and other staff members (Marketing, Programming, etc.), and I would like to see more communication between these areas.

Advice

Ask lots of questions and don't be afraid to grab coffee with coworkers (in or out of your department) to get to know them and their work!

The experience of learning from a huge amount of skilled and intelligent journalists. I got the chance to pitch several stories, and some have been published!

What I wish was different

N/A.

Advice

Don't be afraid of letting your voice be heard in the newsroom. It might be intimidating because you're an intern, but everyone is super respectful.
