National Outdoor Leadership School

Outfitting Coordinator

May 2015 - August 2019 • Lander, WY

What I liked

The community in which I worked was amazing. I loved coming to work everyday. There are many great things that come with working within the NOLS community. I learned about everything that goes into an expedition from behind the scenes and worked to make hundreds of successful expeditions go out into the field. I learned an absolutely incredible amount from this job.

What I wish was different

As most of us know, NOLS doesn't pay very well. There are lots of other perks that come with working within the community, but the actual pay rate isn't great, even after working there for years. Diversity and inclusion within NOLS also needs a great deal of work. A lot to talk about there.

Advice

Try to find new ways to grow in your job and push to see the changes you want to occur, even if something has been done a certain way for years. If you are a woman working in a male dominated field, stick up for yourself and those around you and don't doubt yourself.

What I liked

Backpacking was a completely new experience for me but the instructors on the trip taught me everything I needed to know. They gave me space to learn and grow on my own .

What I wish was different

It was the first time they conducted the service backpacking trip so logistics could have been more organized.

Advice

Don't be afraid to go backpacking if you've never been!
