The atmosphere and team was a lot of fun to work with. Everyone was extremely helpful and resourceful. The work that they give you is actually meaningful. You are taught how to use different databases, and how to organize/read the data so that it is meaningful.

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Montpelier, VT

What I liked

I loved the program that they had. They had a lot of lunch and learns where we learned about the company, how it's run, and how to be better professionals. The company itself was also just a great place to work at. It had a great culture and is a company I would seriously consider working for long-term if I was in the insurance industry.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more work to do in our own departments. We had a lot of work for the program, but once we were in our separate departments, a lot of interns weren't very busy. Luckily, I was in one of the more busy departments, but there were still definitely times when I completed all my work and just had to wait for my next project.

Advice

Make sure to plan ahead. If you are going to a new location, learn about housing in the area and what things you can do there. I wish I would have had a better plan for what I wanted to do during my free time.

Financial Planning & Analysis Intern

May 2017 • Montpelier, VT

What I liked

National Life Group provides meaningful work for its interns, roughly 40 total in Vermont and Texas, and the opportunity to engage with senior management. NLG gave us a real-world challenge to solve over the course of the ten-week period. My intern team worked with the People Center (HR) to develop and present a recruitment strategy at the end of the ten-week internship. I also appreciated the networking opportunities with senior leaders, NLG's CEO included, and how close NLG was to Burlington, Vermont.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a rotational/job shadowing aspect to the internship program. As a part of the FP&A team I did not have much of an opportunity to interact with distribution finance, audit, asset management, etc. to look into other areas that interested me.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity NLG provides you with and learn as much as you possibly can. I had the opportunity to continue interning in a different department after the ten-week internship. Working in a different department will help me better understand what I want to pursue as a career.

Audit Intern

May 2017 • Montpelier, VT

What I liked

Great managers, group projects, and exposure to different areas of interest.

What I wish was different

Wish the interns had been given more background on the industry (life insurance) upfront.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask others within company to job shadow them or ask your manager to give you exposure to different areas of the company. They will only know what you want to experience if you ask!
