Marine Conservation Extern

June - August 2023 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

This opportunity provided externs with an opportunity to do a local research project that is based on a passion held within the externs. We all had the chance to speak with real conservationists and those in related fields, as well as connect with them professionally and receive feedback. Also given the opportunity to apply for funding for a local conservation project.

What I wish was different

I had no problems with this opportunity.

Advice

Stick to a consistent working schedule, although it is remote and we're mainly left to our own pacing, it is important to not fall behind and dedicate a consistent amount of time early so you have a chance to receive feedback and change whatever one needs.

Events and Logistics Intern - Explorer Community

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This was the most positive and rewarding work experience I've had. The culture at National Geographic Society is incredible and the amount of trust they place in their interns makes their internships an opportunity like no other. I got to work on incredible projects and felt like not "just an intern" but a valued member of the team I was with.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've stayed even longer!

Advice

Make the most of every second of it! Every single staff member is willing to meet with you and talk to you about the work they do and about your interests. It is a productive and positive environment that makes coming to work every day an absolute joy.

Measurement, Evaluation, and Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It's a great organization to work for in general, in terms of the people, the overall environment, and the mission! Everyone was very friendly and supportive. I felt like I was doing real work, and beyond that, real work that mattered. There were also cool opportunities arranged for the interns, including the chance to meet the CEO and other Nat Geo leadership. Plus, the annual Explorers Festival takes place during the summer internship and is an incredible chance to meet and be inspired by Explorers!

What I wish was different

I wish I'd had more of a chance to interact with others, since I was mostly doing individual projects. There were 30 other interns, and while there were events that we all went to, there weren't many opportunities to connect or work together beyond that. In terms of the work, there wasn't a ton of variety in my projects, but I think that's kind of inevitable with a Measurement and Evaluation role.

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of the amazing people there! Don't be afraid to reach out to anyone who's doing cool work -- chances are, they'd love to meet up and talk with you!
